I liked this movie. It was a bit more accurate than that of the TUDORS series on SHOW TV. Also, it didn't have so much blah blah sex in it. I went for the history and not the sex, so I rather enjoyed it. However though there was very, very little truth in the trashy TUDOR series on TV. My advise to others is not to watch it. It is filled with nothing but trashy lie after lie.

You forgot to mention that it looked HORRIBLE. The palette was murky and the DP only has four shots (low angle, single over a shoulder, shooting through lattice or glass, long shot into a narrow doorway during an emotional scene so you can't see the actors). The photography was so bad I could hardly focus on the thin story for the first half of the film. The usually attractive actors (Johanssen, Portman, Bana) looked bland and sickly with the lack of lighting. It looks like it was shot in 1978. The editing is choppy. The soundtrack is cheesy and boring. Having read the book I filled in all the holes in the story with what I already knew. I enjoyed the performances though (when they were lit and I could see them) except for that of the Boleyn father, who looks constipated and whines through all his scenes.

A quick correction here. It was pointed out to me by a reader that Maximus did not in fact battle Marcus Aurelius at the end of "Gladiator."

He actually fought Johnny Cash.
