Feast is the much maligned Project Greenlight horror film directed by John Gulager. Although after watching a special advanced screening and meeting Gulager, it becomes apparent that much of the tragedy surrounding Project Greenlight was reserved for the doomed television show and not Feast.
This romp of a horror movie blasts you in the face over and over again. Blood? Bullets? Vomit? Violence? Monster sex? You got it all here. The film moves at a roaring pace with a ripe sense of humor that had the audience laughing in between shrieks, oooo’s and aaaaaa’s. It’s a fun movie definitely made for the gorehound and horror fan rather than the average audience or the art crowd, as Project Greenlight has previously been a load of art house dribble to be wiped away without a second thought (a dollar in profit).
The story is simple. All our characters, most of whom don’t even have names, just handles, are stuck in a bar that is besieged by big, smart, fast, gruesome, nasty, horny, hungry, violent and vile monsters. No one is spared. Good looking heroes or handicapped brothers or comedic fat men. You never know when, where, why, or how the next death will happen. Although its a pretty safe bet you could randomly select any character and be right, and the method of death is generally “painful” and “at the hands of a monster.”
This film has a very limited release but will soon be available on DVD in October. If you’re a fan of the genre at all, this movie will make you giggle. If you’re squeamish, stay away. All in all, it was a damn fun time in the movies. Its the kind of movies no one makes anymore, ie, a movie that was made to give people what they want and have fun with. The idea was never the bottom dollar or the profit, although I’m sure they’d love a bit of green. But for now, they’ll have to settle with a horror blood-bath to be proud of.
Final Grade: A
The Upside: Balls to the wall (and the floor, you’ll see) fun horror movie with tons of blood and bad ass monsters.
The Downside: Very limited distribution. The movie is great as is, for what it is, but the actress who played “Heroine 1″ is flat and she couldn’t make me care for her more than anyone else.
On The Side: Feast is John Gulager’s first feature film and the third and final film from Project Greenlight, which has been subsequently canceled. Wes Craven executive produced.
