Good Luck Chuck

Movie Review By Joe Ngo on September 30, 2007 | (2) Comments

Ahh, another romantic comedy to go along with the Wedding Crashers and Knocked Ups of the world. Following the same basic formula of those movies, Good Luck Chuck provided a decent, though not excellent adaptation of the popular genre. Starring Jessica Alba and Dane Cook, we delve into the relationship between a cursed dentist, and a klutzy penguin loving cutie. Alba doesn’t always have the best roles, but this one suited her, and suited her well in my opinion. It’s hard to find a movie like this that the girl and I agree on, and we both agreed that this was an enjoyable film!

Chuck Logan (Dane Cook) is a successful dentist who had a hex placed on him as a child; a result of a game of spin the bottle gone horribly wrong. The hex: Any of the women he does the deed with will find true love….. with the NEXT guy they meet. Of course, word of Chuck’s good luck gets around, and he finds himself the subject of many women’s affections, albeit for one night only. In a scene reminiscent of Wedding Crashers, Chuck makes the rounds with the women, to the point where the sex becomes boring for them! This continues until Chuck meets the klutzy penguin lover Cam Wexler (Jessica Alba). Chuck decides its time to settle down with his true love… but what about the hex??

Crazy situations and predictable gags follow. As usual, there is the vulgar sidekick, this time played by Dan Fogler. He adds the voice of non-reason and blunt reality to Chuck’s dreams. With plenty of nudity (non-Jessica Alba) and sexual innuendo (I’ll never think of grapefruit the same way again), this provided a decent amount of laughs, so if you’re not into that you probably won’t like it. Some points were just downright gross. But, if you’re looking for a decent flick that follows the formula of Wedding Crashers, you’ll probably find something you like!

Overall, I thought it was a cutesy romantic comedy. It was exactly what the people who were going to see it wanted, a decent date movie.

The Upside: Jessica Alba is really hot. Really hot. The penguins were also cute.

The Downside: Just following the same formula as before, trying to leech off the success of its predecessors. Also, it ruined grapefruit for me… and almost lobster too.

On the Side: The movie was originally called “The Warm Up Guy”. Guess cuz Chuck was warming em up for the next one… too corny for me. :-P
