I can't simply agree more with you my friend. Dread could be a seriously good movie if they had stayed close to the original storie. Instead they chose to create just another teens-horror film with the "good" and the "bad" guys... Clive from the other hand barely seperates good from evil in his stories.
What the original story "Dread" meant to say is that the very same man can be both the victim and the killer under certain events... something this movie failed to say.
And.. just like you said... Not even Clive himself proved able to make a good film so far.. Besides the original Hellraiser (1&2) anything else was/is just a low budget production raped by its own creators.

You really did DiBlasi a favor with that C. I am not prone to get angry when a director or screenwriter takes some liberties when adapting short stories or novels, but I really, really disliked his "Dread". Quaid & Stephen: total miscast. The guy playing Quaid had no charisma, just a pretty boy giving a standard psycho performance. Same with Stephen; emo boy look + sucky acting= lots of clicks to the fast forward button. Why did they introduced another character to take Stephen´s place as the "deaf fool" that makes reality Quaid´s nightmares? This guy kills Stephen and the obnoxious "Quaid" gets away with murder? The twist ending: unnecesary. I disagree with you about the Abby character. She adds nothing to the story, and that "I-am-so-dirty-must-scrub-clean-with bleach" scene is a tired cliche, have seen it like a dozen times in popular fiction.

To be fair, they did a good job with the "Cheryl eats meat" sequence. Just like I imagined it.

When will they do a good adaptation of Books Of Blood stories? When I read them as a teenager I used to think they were prime filming material, but it seems they don´t translate so easily to celluloid...still waiting for that kickass Clive Barker movie. Even the guy himself can´t make a decent movie anymore. Sigh-
