A ton of reviews coming out of Cannes and elsewhere talked about the violence in great detail, revealing things about the movie they shouldn't have. For me it slightly spoiled its impact. It's hard to talk about the violence in this movie in vague terms without giving anything away, and I wanted to avoid what these other critics are doing, so I avoided it altogether. I'll just say it's a really difficult movie to watch.

I have heard that there is a fair amount of violence in the film, including genital mutilation. I would have liked to have seen more in the review about the violence and whether or not it could be stomached.

What makes a Dogme 95 film:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95#Goals_and...

I suggest the best place to start is Thomas Vinterberg's "The Celebration" (aka "Festen") from 1998.

Excellent review; you focused so much on the current word of mouth and I think that's very telling of such an apparently divisive film. I always get more from and look deeper at a film that is intelligently criticized but can also be applauded for it's own merits. I was also unaware of the Dogme 95 manifesto and I'm interested to rewatch earlier films around that time and see what compelled him to write it.
