I suppose we should all read any book from which a movie is made - in some sort of ideal world. I did not read the book Atonement. I liked this movie very much, and admired it deeply. If you're a thinking person, I daresay you will like it too.

Atonement looked and felt a lot like Pride and Prejudice, impeccable setting, acting and dialogue. A bit depressing toward the end, but over all very well done.

i wonder: Is Briony's vocabulary typical for British 13 year olds?

This film was absolutely stunning and not at all what I expected. The seamlessly shot scene on the beach is probably one of my favourite scenes in recent years. The visual and emotional scope of it was astounding to the imagination. The juxtaposition of the sacred hymn and the bawdy bar room chant were equally compelling examples of humanity asserting itself amongst the burned out ruins and destruction of war.

The film was like a captivating piece of impressionistic art that draws you into many vibrant layers and bold new colours. As noted by Peter Travers "this is not your father's period piece" and it is all the better for it. A complex and very human theme is given a dynamic new approach and I was left breathless, needing time to gather my thoughts for quite some time afterwards.
