Going Down Again with a First Look at The Descent 2

The original Descent is one of those perfect and complete movie experiences that in no way needs a sequel… but its success on DVD pretty much guaranteed we would get one anyway. Announced a few months ago, the sequel is currently in production, and the first on-set photo is on display over at Fangoria. It shows one of the cave dwelling bat boys. Yawn.

Pardon my lack of interest, but this straight-to-dvd sequel has little to offer aside from the return of the entire cast of the original. What’s that you say? Everybody died in the first film? True… but this is the movies where anything can happen! You just have to accept two details… first, forget the proper ending with everyone dead and Sarah alone and crazy in the bowels of the cave. The American ending where Sarah (played again by Shauna Macdonald) survives is this film’s starting point. And second, that camcorder the women had? They filmed lots of action and drama we never got to see.

That’s right… the cast is returning via camcorder footage. Sarah leads the local police down into the cave to search for her friends that, as she should already know, have been eaten, digested, and pooped back out. Neil Marshall has little to nothing to do with the sequel, which is being directed by Jon Harris, the first film’s editor. The only thing that can make this movie even slightly interesting is if Juno (played again by Natalie Mendoza) is somehow still alive, pissed off, and hunting down Sarah as everyone else is stalked by the albino cave monkeys.
