I know this story isn’t exactly “new” news, but in the wake of the call by Star Wars fans to boycott Superhero Movie, I couldn’t let this one slide.
Apparently a group of Hindu leaders are planning on protesting Mike Myers’ upcoming cinematic travesty The Love Guru for its lampooning of their religion. Lila D. Sharma, president of the India Heritage Panel in Chandigarh, India, has said, “Hollywood is trying to make money by laughing at our holy men and in the process creating a stereotype.”
What the fuck?
There’s a lot to be upset about with The Love Guru, but it has nothing to do with Hindu stereotypes. Rather, people should be protesting this movie because it is primed to have more suckage potential this summer than Jack Black as an ass-kicking panda.
This would be as ridiculous as Canadians protesting the film because the trailer of the movie says that Toronto is part of America… Or Jessica Alba fans protesting the film because it’s going to give her a rep for making lame movies… Or Little People of America protesting the film because it sustains Vern Troyer’s subservience to Mike Myers.
When will people learn?
The bottom line is this… whenever someone decides to protest a movie, it usually garners infinitely more media attention to the film than would have otherwise happened. In a roundabout way, such protests bolster the film and give it that much more attention.
So chill out, Hindus! Quit protesting The Love Guru, or you might put it on its way to be a surprise hit of the summer.
And come to think of it, why am I even writing about this? I’ve just raised awareness for this turd of a film.
Dammit!
I’m shutting up now.
