Peter Jackson is reportedly planning to release extended versions of the upcoming DVD release for King Kong. Even though the film was 3 hours long to begin with, as with Lord of the Rings there is much more to be seen. The only question is when the extended versions will be released.
This brings me to one of the more annoying things that filmmakers can do in regards to a DVD release: separate “extended” and “special” editions that are released shortly after the “plain jane” version of the film is released. I often see this as a horrid marketing ploy that plays on the weakness of those of us who are saps for buying the “bigger and better” versions. My question to the industry becomes, “why can’t you just release them all on the same day?” or even “why can’t you just make one version of the film?” Wouldn’t that be a better option, at least for consumers?
All that said, my hope is that Jackson does not follow suit with the spectacle that was the Lord of the Rings trilogy DVD release, where multiple versions were released, repackaged, and re-released all on completely different dates. Especially due to the fact that King Kong may not find as wide an audience on DVD, but that is merely speculation on my part…
