"Most of all, is this what we want our premier American art form to be? One big commercial for children’s toys? A testament to materialistic consumerism? Yet another way to convince our children that life is all about acquiring stuff?"<br>Living in the real world of material reality, where people have to work for a living? OMG, how scary for 'artistic' people.

well. i don`t know how anyone can say that he did this movie ``well``, considering it`s basically a movie about cars, with little to no dialogue from the actual transformers (mostly none from the decepticons). i`m not the most fanatic fan. but i don`t just hate bay. i hate the writers, i hate the execs that let this happen, i hate everyone that had a hand in this movie, it makes me even more upset that peter cullen actually voiced optimus prime. and you know what, transformers wasn`t the worst movie, i was mildly entertained. enough to stay awake, but looking back on it, was probably the fucking explosions. this movie was nothing more than a money grab.<br><br>the movie wasn`t transformers, it was dumb-ass fucking robots fighting for a planet, it hardly made sense. i don`t know. i`m older now, so why would i just abandon nostalgia that i actually still enjoy, it wasn`t just a toy line, sure people bought the toys, but they didn`t just sit around. kids played with them and made up their own stories, it basically was an imagination excercise for most. so the toy line defense is bullshit, transformers rocked 100X balls. but the 2007 movie licked my right and left testicle in terms of being a transformers movie. the 86 animated was way awesome. at least way more than this movie. fuck, they should have called it. ``changing robots that can be killed by humans``. then i would not be mad at all. i just would`ve laughed. the old characters had heart, and when autobots died they were genuinely sad. kids cried when optimus died in the animated movie VERY early on. and was still bad-ass to the fucking core. the humor was ridiculous but at the same time fresh and original. when ironhide died (was it ironhide). the characters couldn`t have had less emotion. it was pathetic. i read somewhere some kid readied a slip-knot when optimus said ``my bad``. i think. i`ll go do that. talk about killing a franchise. no transformers fan in their right mind would ever willingly hope michael bay would direct a movie about their favourite cartoon. and the writers my sweet fuck, we can`t forget them, half of this was their doing..<br><br>so, to the reviewer of michael bay. before you berate a ``marketing ploy`` from hasbro. you should probably watch it. i mean come on even if was a big marketing ploy, you don`t seriously think that hasbro was watching the writing process thinking, OHHH optimus HAS to die RIGHT NOW. yeah, unlikely. FUCK I HATE SO MANY PEOPLE

"His movies make about 1.8 their budget."

Sorry, but your studio perspective falls short. Movies need to make back triple their budget to be profitable. You left out advertising and distribution costs, which occur in post production, and in an unusual accounting move, studios charge themselves interest on the money spent, so it takes a long while for money to be recouped.

At one time the vast majority of people thought the world was flat, so that's not necessarily a plus for Bay. His movies are always poorly put together visually and the stories are flawed, but if loud noises and shiny objects entertain you, good for you. I don't understand it, but then I don't understand why some people enjoy being used as a toilet during sex. You guys should like the video I put on YouTube. It's a clip of my car keys being shook while pots and pans are dropped on the floor.

Fight the good fight, Mr. Hand, and don't listen to whiners like Brent and the rest.

Agreed, JKT. It's not fair to judge a film solely on the fact that the director is an asshole. I will say, however, that the best parts of TRANSFORMERS all occur within the first ten minutes of the movie. After that, things go downhill. It's still entertaining, but, as I said, it still contains all the crap that makes the rest of Bay's movies suck.

As for you, Mr. Miller... for God's sakes, please don't unleash any little gay spawn of Michael Bay on the world! Mercy!

As a critic Mister Hand, you should judge the movie by its individualness, not on what the director did in the past. You say its a decent movie but then give it a 'd' due to the director's past films. Your quote "So even though I was marginally entertained by this film, I can't grade it higher than a “D.” That would just be wrong. Michael Bay has wrought too much evil in the world of film."
That is just not right. It just seems people are angry cause Bay made a good movie. I have saw maybe one or two of his films and Transformer would be the second one, and it was good. You can't tell people that is was a decent movie but don't see it, they will just want to see it more.

"I'm actually part of the Bay fanbase. So is Neil Miller. His movies are always exciting and entertaining."

Scratch that... Brian is a fan. I would have Michael Bay's babies if he would let me.

I also have a thing for Steve Jobs, but any fan of <a href="http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/podcast" rel="nofollow">Fat Guys at the Movies</a> would already know that...

Salieri's operas were far more popular in their day than Mozart's. Today, no one listens to Salieri, but everybody has heard Mozart.

In the "good" versus "entertaining" debate, I would argue that I personally have not found a single Michael Bay movie (aside from TRANSFORMERS) to be in the least bit entertaining. I never saw BAD BOYS II but I did see the original and can honestly say I hated every minute of it. I saw PEARL HARBOR and the only reason I didn't leave the theater is because I wanted to see just how much worse it could get. Just when I thought the damn thing couldn't possibly get any worse, the horrible ending came along. The whole thing was like rubbernecking while passing a car wreck.

Michael Bay is awesome. It really comes down to one simple reason. He gives the people what they want. Lots of "critics" pan him and attempt to destroy him, even on personal levels -ahem-

However, none of that stops the vast majority of the movie going public wanting to see hot women, fast cars, lots of gun fights, and big explosions. Add in some comedy and you've got yourself a string of 100 million dollar movies, like Mr. Bay, The Island excluded.

I'll readily admit to being a 23 year old man-child who is refusing to grow up and say that Schindler's List is my favorite movie when I'd much rather be watching Transformers. I'd say that 95% of people would choose to watch Transformers 95% of the time over Schindler's List. Which is the better movie? Obvious question. Which is better entertainment? Equally obvious.

Also, from a studio perspective, let's take a look at Mr. Bay economically. His movie will be broken down as follows: Title, Cost of Production, Domestic Gross, World Gross, Total Gross, Net Profit/Loss.

Bad Boys: 19 Million : 65.8 Million : 75.6 Million : 141 Million : 122 Million
The Rock: 75 Million: 134 Million : 200.9 Million : 335 Million : 260 Million
Armageddon: 140 Million : 201.6 Million : 352 Million : 553.7 Million : 414 Million
Pearl Harbor: 140 Million : 198.5 Million : 250.7 Million : 449 Million : 309 Million
Bad Boys II : 130 Million : 138.6 Million : 134.7 Million : 273 Million : 143 Million
The Island: 126 Million : 35.8 Million : 127 Million : 162.9 Million : 37 Million
*Transformers: 150 Million : 152.5 Million : 97 Million : 250 Million : 100 Million
* - In Progress

Total Money Spent: 780 Million
Total Money Made: 1.4 Billion
His movies make about 1.8 their budget. If you would remove the Island bomb, it'd be much sweeter. So in conclusion, Bay is a godsend to theaters and audiences, giving both what they want - Money and Fun.
