Talking Points: So… What Did You Think of Cloverfield?
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on January 20, 2008
Alright folks, here is the deal. We have given tons of prime real estate on this site to the recently released Cloverfield, so it would be very inconsiderate of us if we did not at least see what you think about the damn film. You’ve probably already seen what we’ve had to say about it. If not, check out reviews from Robert Fure, Brian Gibson, Kevin Carr and Jessica Rogers.
But those are our opinions. We’ve already got enough of those. We now want, nay — need your opinions to make this whole thing complete. And we know you saw the movie — it’s making a killing at the box office this weekend. So speak up, people!

BMJ — It never fails… You always find a way to surprise me with your quips…

Cloverfield in math form.
Felicity+Dawson’s Creek+The Blair Witch Project+Starship Troopers alien bug+=Cloverfield.
I’m not against anyone’s opinion. People love it. People hate it.
“Disappointment”
Is the best way for me to put it in to one word.

That Movie was so awesome! I just want to see it again! Wat the Hell Was up wit that monster!
January 20th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Good rollercoaster ride. I wished they upped the reality of it a bit. I really think an 18A rating (us R) would have made it more enjoyable, but then again they wouldn’t be able to reach everyone with this movie.

It was exhilarating, but left me clueless, not surprising given its an Abrahms film. I wish it stuck with the original opening of finding classified films and moved to another film or news broadcast to give another perspective. In fact, he could do the whole film over again from another perspective or a sequel that shows what happened afterwards, did the bombs work, does the monster move on to other states? What happened to the other something terribles?
January 20th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Honestly, the movie really is a ‘love hate’ relationship. I really enjoyed how intence it was. I caught myself eyes and mouth wide open while my heart was pounding out of my chest and I was on the edge of my seat … But then again, I was wishing for more of a “real-life” movie. Not bashing that sort of something could ever happen … Too many people are way too closed off, not “Open minded” … I love to put myself in the movies as if it was happening to me. Because if you really think about something like that happening … That would be some scary stuff and half the people that say “This movie sucks” those would be the ones that would be way to chicken dung about it and off them selves right away. Back to the Clover, the dramatic love bullcrap we saw in the movie MIGHT have been too much BUT again, put yourself in his shoes and wouldn’t you have done them same? Yes you would have, shut up. Sometimes the actors made a real beleavable ‘fright face’ but at time it was just too Hollywood. That was the only thing that I didn’t like, plus, anyone that has been to the Statue Of Liberty knows that the head which was torn off and thrown should have been A LOT bigger then that. All in all I thought it was a pretty good movie and I’d like to see it again, anyone care to join?

I don’t know what to think about the Movie.

Just saw the movie. Brilliant! You either get it or you don’t.
If you’re prone to motion sickness, the hand-held camera work will make you queezy, but that only adds to its sense of intimate, sickening, realism.
I find it hard to believe this movie could ever have a sequel shot in 3rd-person perspective. It would somehow seem wrong… perhaps more ftg. of the creature shot from helicopters, on-sight gov’t agencies, or local news teams could find it’s way onto the viral (after-movie) marketing or onto the DVD? That would truly give the nay-sayers means for pause.
Matt Reeves/JJ Abrams use the Brooklyn Bridge to pay wonderful homage to a most famous scene from “Beast From 20,000 Fathoms”. And many other scenes hearkened back to the days of movies that would only partially reveal their monsters… until the time was right.
Great job… you go you Bad Robot.
Now… JJ… if you were thinking of a sequel… and you could pull off the whole “Gorgon” angle… that just might rock the planet.
PS.
Stay for the closing credits to hear “ROAR”, the Cloverfield theme. Like the monster, it’s worth the wait… what’s that weak transmission heard at the end of it? “…It’s still alive”.

After seeing cloverfield, I must say the hype was not worth it. There was some funny parts and yes. there were spots in the movie that scared my wife and made me jump but overall, there was no reason behind the movie. In a typical monster movie, there is a backstory about the creature itself. There was none in this movie, no foreshadowing at all about the creature.. my only real gripe is that they missed a major chance to fill out the story about the creature instead of creature attacks NY. I hope when they release it to dvd, they include more background info on the creature.

Alright, first off, ive been to the movie twice now, and i’m very frustrated that i am now for the first time just hearing about the splash at the end, i didnt see it! ha, but alright, first topic of discussion, at the start of the movie when they go onto the roof, what in the world was that initial explosion? i am rather positive the building didnt just explode by itself?
Second, i do like the 2 monster idea, but the fact is, after the heli crashes in the park, you can clearly hear over the radio that they say that there is only one monster and that it is still alive, you’d think if there were 2 that they would have noticed by now? this doesnt completly rule out the possibility of 2 monsters though, because i was thinking and well….it seems rather plosible that there could have been one monster in the water and one monster on land (maybe mother, daughter?) because the monster on land didnt have tenticals like the one that attacked the bridge, and when they are on the bridge, as in before the monster attacks, Hud looks out over the water at the burning city, and not only is it on fire, there is a clear path where the monster went on land, and THEN they get attacked….think about it.
Just to clear things up about the spider like things, ive been informed that they are supposed to be like the creatures that clean whales (if you know what i’m talking about) they are supposidly based off those. just give me feed back about my theorys
thanks
January 20th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
if none of that made since to you, please dont bash the ideas, just go watch the movie again
January 21st, 2008 at 12:38 am
I liked the movie it was great, but i think it could have ended better. The monster was awesome i couldnt get a good look at it cause of all the shadows and moving around. so i would give the movie a 7 out of 10, but the ending sucked, like dbshark94 said, that the weak transmission leaves an opening for a sequel.
January 21st, 2008 at 1:20 am
If anyone has played the video game Final Fantasy X, a game that is about 6 years old, they will recognize the monster almost exactly, im not joking, right down to the little spawns that fly off it, the tentacles and everything.
overall though i think it was ok
January 21st, 2008 at 11:37 am
What hit the bridge, in my opinion was the monsters tail which has a tentacle like appearance up close.
January 21st, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Listen, people who hated this movie missed the whole point. I believe that they went to see this movie with the preconceived notion that they was going to show the origin of the monster and that there was going to be a happy ending with the monster being destroyed. This movie delievers exactly what its suppose to do, one minute life is going on as usual (partying) and then all of a sudden chaos happens. If u are going to see this movie, u have to understand that chaos has no happy ending or plot. The scenery was very realistic being shot from a camera, and I felt like I was actually in the movie. The monster was simply magnificant. He looked real and I liked how JJ showed him in relation to the people running for their lives. I like the ending and it made sense for the simple fact that the soldier told Rob that “afer u hear the sirens u have 15 mins to leave before Manhattan gets nuked.” Somehow the negative comments forgot that!
January 21st, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I thought the movie was great….not another Independence Day-type movie with the usual plot of:
maverick scientist that nobody believes
former lovers brought together by tragedy
Last-minute plot to save the Earth
All of the cliche one liners
January 21st, 2008 at 2:58 pm
they missed some key elements of reality in this “masterpiece”. first and foremost, after homeboy saw the newsflash about the bugs he should have made that disturbingly clear to his buddies.. second why aren’t they carrying around weapons? he breaks into a vending machine with a crowbar.. “if there’s bugs chasing me i’m bringin this crowbar” was the line i was waiting for. third there would have been ALOT MORE BUGS!!! i dont want a sequel i want the first movie to make sense. isn’t that what i paid 8 bucks for? not some grasshopper eyed freak experiment of a monster seemingly chasing these kids around manhattan for 2 hours.. no transmission at the end is gonna make that fact any more or less sucky. overall i loved it.
January 21st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Quite frankly I can’t believe people are still buying into the hype and furthermore I can’t believe critics aren’t tearing this film to pieces. This film is mediocre at best, and failed to come to fruition. If nothing else, Abrams had a great advertisement blitz on his side, perhaps one of the best in cinematic history and he blew his chances. The acting is poor, the actors look uncomfortable and unnatural. I do like the personal touch added by the hand-held camera, but come on, why so rigid? This movie deserves at the very best a D, for disaster that is.
January 21st, 2008 at 5:12 pm
There is nothing to “Get” or “understand” about Cloverfield. It’s not complex. It is a B-Grade Monster Movie, and thats why I really liked it. If it was hyper-realistic or too serious, I probably would have hated it. But it was definitely my kind of movie in the semi-campy horror-ish sci-fi genre. It wasn’t marketed that way, so some people are burned by it.
One reason why I enjoyed it is that I refused to buy the hype. I went in with low expectations and found something I liked. A friend of mine was so amped up about it he was talking about seeing it for 3 weeks, then saw it opening weekend and was disappointed.
I told you. Hype Sucks.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:03 pm
More than anything, this movie is about people thrown into a situation that is much much bigger than themselves and it completely throws off their silly self-involved lives. “ooh who is sleeping with who? really?!?! oh my god! ooh is so and so coming to the party?! oh I’ma make a move on her!”
you know?
And when they find themselves in said situation, they act in very strange ways, rationalizing their choices based on impulse judgments. Some people’s conscience wakes up and they have to right certain wrongs, some look out for themselves while others try to hold on to the last shard of humanity and ’sense’ they can find. (Not to mention, this specific group of people must have been rather wasted from all that partying anyway - so don’t hold impossible feats against them)
As far as people’s gripes with film-making, film-structure, back-story or what happened to the monster blah blah blah… goes.
All I have to say is that this is a very ‘Year 2008′ movie. You can’t look at it as a standard go to the theater and watch a movie.. movie. It’s more like an eye-witness report, a complimentary video piece to a larger news story. That’s whats wrong with it - it belongs on youtube and not a movie screen - people wouldn’t reject it if they found this video on youtube while searching for breaking news about a major catastrophe that hit new york a couple hours ago. You see what I’m trying to say? I’m sorry I have to bring this up - but look at any major news event in recent past.. say for example the Benazir Bhutto assassination. There are bits and pieces of information all over the place - shaky camera footage, under-exposed photographs, etc. Not a single one of those can be a stand-alone tell-all - you can’t pick one shaky camera video and find out why it happened, how it happened, who was responsible - it’s just what recorded history looks like in the Year 2008.
Cloverfield is not a PhD thesis paper on the absolute history of that monster that struck New York that one day. It’s just a lousy SD card or mini DV tape, in the hands of the Department of Defense. ..And we have no clue when or how they found it and reviewed it. 2 days from now? 2 weeks? 10 years? who knows. You’re just the lucky few (or unlucky) who got to see a glimpse of what happened that day. And J J Abrams is some dude who doesn’t want you to see it on your tiny notebook or PDA - so he’s letting you see it on a giant movie screen. :)
January 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
saw the movie this afternoon…the negatives: the whole “person carrying the video camera while crap is happening all around him”..very hard to buy in to!..the little creatures that fall from the “mother creature”..too much like the aliens from starship troopers. The ending…sucked. Positives: A totally different look to a monster..very good. Good story line..you figure if this “thing” just appeared out of no where there is noway anybody (the public) should know where it came from..how it got here..what does it want, realistic in that sence. grade C+

Ever since I saw the Blair Witch project, I’ve always wanted to see a monster movie shot in this manner- be it Bigfoot, dinosaurs, aliens etc. The trailer did not prepare me for how enjoyable it would be. I expected cheesy Roger Corman B-movie special effects hidden by darkness, smoke, and jump cuts. I was pleasantly surprised. I must confess some disappointment however, in not knowing the creatures’ origin; but then I remind myself that it is seen from an individual running for his life with a camcorder in his hand. How many of us would stop to wonder about the origin of a tsunami if 100ft waves were bearing down on us? Loved it, and will go see it again.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
It was awesome! This movie has now set the standard for future Giant Monster Movies. I LOVED it!
January 21st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I liked the movie, and you aren’t supposed to get the back story about this monster from this movie, I mean come on didn’t you people understand from the word go that they found this tape, they are giving you what happened to these people at this time. There is obviously going to be a sequal that will tell you everything you want to know about the monster. Anyone that watched the previews can figure that out. It clearly said that this is a camera that was found in what USED to be Central Park. The Casefile was “Cloverfield”. Didn’t any of you watch that show on the Discovery channel about what happens after distruction of this magnatude? It regrows over with plant life…. Clover? That also means that since it was a nuclear blast that it wasn’t found for several years. So the movie will probably be some time in the future. My main point here is… You are looking for something in this movie that wasn’t supposed to be there. That will all be told in the next movie.
January 21st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
i am going to have to say for me it was disapointing because i was too excited to see it and almost was “too excited”…if you are someone reading this dont expect the most if you’ve already watched the trailers about 100 times or tried to find out what the monster looks like on google.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
this movie fucking sucked! i fell like punching babies in the face after seeing this piece of shit movie!
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:23 am
Saw the movie, loved it. Everything about it was good. Theres a couple of things to look for, 1st, at the end they show the couple on a Ferris wheel, and I’m told the camera moves to the right and you can see something fall from the sky and into the water. Secondly, at the very end of the credits you hear a transmission from the main character (?) saying “help me” (?)
Good movie, go watch it. They are going to make a sequel from the perspective of a guy they showed filming them back while on the Brooklyn Bridge…take that haters!
January 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 am
If you are a monster movie fan then you will absolutely love this movie and I thought it was great. It builds the tension nicely throughout the movie without giving anything away about the cause of this disaster and the creature everyone is talking about. I have to agree with some comments that people are missing the point of the movie…it was a home video film found years after the original attack happened so there are no before and after storylines. I didn’t really like the love story rescue thing (why do all movies have to have this !) as there is no way the army would have allowed civilians back into a danger zone. For me go and see it…I loved the cam footage as this makes it so much more real and brings you into the movie itself.
January 22nd, 2008 at 10:14 am
Monster - (mon-stur) - 1. any creature so ugly or monstrous as to frighten people.
2. any animal or human grotesquely deviating from the normal shape, behavior, or character.
For openers, the single camera perspective gave this movie a level of realism few other films can compare to. The lack of an explaination of the monster’s orgin and motives only added to the drama, and the accurate representation of real-life chaos (confusion, media generated random bits of information, all-out self-preservation) were flawless.
People behaved realistically - take the sea of camera phones flashing pictures of the decapitated Statue of Liberty, or the desire to steal a flat screen tv while the world around you crumbles. The monster itself? Hideous. My favorite scene is the depiction of the monster dropping parasites on the soilders attacking the host (as if the horror of the beast wasn’t enough). An amazing movie, definitely worth 8 bucks.
January 22nd, 2008 at 10:37 am
Really well done. I’ve already seen it twice and will probably go see it again.
WATCH THIS MOVIE!
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
ok, if you dont know it yet, theres a manga coming out (or maybe it already did)
about a the origins of the monster, so i sugest you trie to find it and read it.
quick review of the movie
awsome, loved it wanto to read the manga and see it from other points of view maybe a military point of view?
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Well-made and creative movie. Watched this movie twice just to see if I had missed anything. The movie is easier to take in and enjoy all the way in the back row. I was watching it from my prime seating spot and the movie made me almost puke from how much shaking there was. All I got to say about the negative is “THE LIGHT.” As with Abrams’ stuff, the really worked it out to the bone but the plot was sorta weak or at least I didn’t feel enough humanity/crisis spilling through.
If you can wait, get it on DVD and watch it at home. The big screen does it no justice. I’d rather watch the thing on a smaller TV to mimic the experience of watching a recording.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
I just didn’t get it.
Oh, and neither did the other 200 people in the theater, or anyone else I talked to about this movie.
If you saw the trailer, you saw the movie. Save your $10.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Wow, anyone got any links to info sites about this movie? Besides the two main ones? I loved the movie, though I’m a cameraman myself, wow, hope they make a sequel. Though the ending gives a lot to be desired, mainly that charaters survive.
January 23rd, 2008 at 12:37 am
Well all that out of focus and zooming and stuff actually made me hurl in the parking lot. But it was totaly worth it. I supose there will be a sequel and I’m hoping maybe a foreign country point of view, then maybe a third movie with only the military.
Anyway, it was good and the marketing was excelent.
January 23rd, 2008 at 1:56 am
whether you loved it or hated it, it’s definitely got people talking. I never thought i would bother to see a movie like this, then my boyfriend dragged me and now i can’t stop thinking about it. not so much “how cool” or “how lame” but more “what??” the director/writers/producer definitely had a stroke of genius with this one because it’s creating a ridiculous stir with everyone, people can’t stop asking questions
January 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 am
I just wanted to say that those of you who are complaining about the lack of back story for the creature obviously missed the concept of the film. If something like this ever did happen, there would be absolute chaos and confusion in the city. There would be no ancient sect of monks to pray for Mothra to come and save civilization. The military would respond, but everyone would be confused as hell if not only out of disbelief that a huge monster was attacking the city and things like that don’t actually happen.
The film is being presented to the audience from a point in time after the attack takes place, presumably as part of a research effort to realize the circumstances of the creature and it’s attack on the city. The only footage shown is from the camera of one of the citizens killed in the attack. Hence, there’s no back story. It would defeat the purpose of the film if they took a break from the footage to tell us that the creature was really a parasitic Zubnak from planet Marklar VI. Who cares?
If you miss the routine cinematic storytelling from the omniscient perspective and dozens of camera angles, then by all means watch something else. There are plenty to choose from. Since this film isn’t being delivered from that perspective, I think they pulled it off excellently. If we saw more creative films like this and less additions to the Saw franchise, I’d probably go to the theater more often. I will agree that the love story sometimes felt like an episode of The O.C., but once the monster started ripping the soul out of NYC I honestly didn’t care anymore. Will see it again.
January 23rd, 2008 at 4:18 am
Meh, thought it was ok. It was pretty much what I expected. I thought they were going to throw some clever twist in their, but nope. The monster was a little dissappointing too. I would watch it again since it’s pretty cool and short.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:15 am
The movie just sucked me in so well; I couldnt believe it. Hud sounded like an abnoxious guy but his jokes curbed the seriousness of the movie enough to keep it from becoming “Blair witch project”-like desperation (to those who dont know, HUD was most likely a reference to Heads Up Display, which makes sense since 9/10 of the movie was in his persective.)
Im still trying to wrap my head around why marlena (I think thats her name)
felt like comming with Hud, Lila and Rob to rescue Beth, even though she was freinds with Lily. Still, the horror of watching her litterally explode gave me a sense of shock and disbelief I have NEVER felt in a movie. In the end, every character’s death really hit home because unlike in most movies where mourning can pass in the very next scene, their losses sink in in real time, and they got under my skin just as slowly. The nearly final scene with Beth crying made my heart bleed for these characters, knowing they would die just as they did. To be fair, the “help us” at the end credits might mean they are alive but its not a guarentee.
I have no complaints about Cloverfield. The screwy camera perspective was actually a great element to the movie you only rarley get to see that adds realism to the perspective. Your camera probably cant do nightvision, and its not made of titanium like this magical camera was (its apparantly drop-proof, bite-proof, helicopter crash-proof, A-Bomb-proof, and based on how long it filmed it seems to be running on a car battery) but it CAN lose focus fast when your distracted, and its all you think about when your there. In the end, thats all that matters.
You know you saw an astounding movie when you cant stop thinking about it after you left the theater and thats exactly what I felt. Thank you JJ Abrams, and thank God movies in camcorder views have not become mainstream: their rarity makes them only more enjoyable.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:38 am
I didn’t really really care to see this movie. I could care less about a movie’s hype, but this is definitely one of my favourite movies. I bought Slusho T-Shirt, mannn.
January 24th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Ok to all of those who did not like tghe move what more did u want it was real with a great story and a fucking kick ass monster for those of u who did enjopyo it i agree but i have done my reasearch on this movie prior to its relaase and Abrams has called this monster teh american godzilla so im guessin and hopefully there will be lots more of this monster to come also as to knowin more about the monster abrams loves mystery its what got him this great movie cuz everyone wants to see heres a little spoiler for u all at the end of the movie when the tape is about to run out and beth and rob are sittin at coney island u can see the ocean in the background and it is disticvley seen that something is falling inot the ocean right near the statue of liberty my two theorys on this are it is either the monster in some sort of meteor or a metoer or satelltie that awoke the monster either way go back and see it agina if ur a real foan and uif not then go watch some dumb ass main stream shit cloverfield doesnt need ur sell out ass anyway
January 25th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Ok first off, i was in the Marine Corps and just got out, those Bombs from the Stealth Bomber…..Please those would have demolished the monster and it would have not gottin up to eat the helicopter. So Yes Please More REALISM!!!!! Even the little tanks……nevermind to much detail.
January 26th, 2008 at 1:10 am
I think it was awesome. I felt like I just rode a hour and half rollercoaster. I don’t know if it was just the movie theatre I was in but that movie had probably the best audio Ive ever heard. I cant wait for it come out on dvd!
January 26th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Somebody mentioned that when Hud looked back at the city from the Brooklyn Bridge, there was a clear path where the monster had come ashore. Actually, that was where the monster went back into the water temporarily.
The monster initially came ashore from the Hudson River (the Statue Of Liberty is southwest of Manhattan, actually in New Jersey). The Brooklyn Bridge is over the East River. So apparently what Hud saw was the clear path where the monster had made its way to the East River before wrecking the Brooklyn Bridge and returning to land.
Also, Manhattan wasn’t nuked; it was bombed conventionally. Considering the circular blast zone of a nuclear weapon, the long, narrow shape of Manhattan Island, and the close proximity of the other boroughs, the use of a nuke would’ve literally been overkill. You’ll note that at the end, when the two characters were underneath that bridge in Central Park as the bombing started, there was no blinding flash as there would’ve been with a nuke. And if a nuke had been used, the camera and the videotape in it would’ve been melted or even vaporized.
January 27th, 2008 at 1:57 am
“Cloverfield” has a simplistic meaning.
* A sentient monster attacks without warning, what would you do?
JJ is still conditioning his audience to want more.
* No explanation of the monster.
* The audio clip at the end.
* The fact the tape was found.
To me, this screams “Sequel!”
By the way, if you don’t think the monster was sentient, you don’t understand the whole scene after the helicopter crash.
January 27th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Horrible movie. I can understand using the home video type shooting in the begining but then it falls apart! OK so I know it is a fantasy movie but what fool would keep shooting? How long does that battery last? How shock proof, water proof, idiot proof is that camera? I know that I want one of those cameras. They needed to shift back to a traditional shot at some point just to let you focus! They really dragged out the begining and a lot of the interactions made no sense. I know that several people have posted that this was a love hate movie but I truly cannot find anything to love! I would love my money back! The only interesting part was the object/creature crashing into the water in the backgroud as they were at Coney Island and that was during the last 2 minutes of the movie! As much as I hated it I am hoping for a second part just to answer some questions!
January 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Okay…Seriously if I wanted to get dizzy, puke, and end with a headache I rather to pay maybe the same amount for a rollercoaster ride than paid whatever was to just go sit and feel like that, I was so happy eating my popcorn and soda and snacks when this “freaking” movie starts making me get dizzy and just like 20 mins later i was puking all over. I tried to catch the essence but… How? I mean that movie was so confuse and weird I guess “that” thing the production smoked when planning on this film, was great cuz the effects it cause on them were so not from this planet, anyway thats my opinion, i also don’t doubt that they might be planning on a second part, just like The Blair Witch…
**DISAPPOINTED**
January 28th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I loved it. It wasn’t like the typical hollywood BS. Most of you will not like it because you want the Will Smith (”You ugle SOB”) garbage but this movie takes itself seriously. Not since the original Alien has an American horror movie been any good. I hope we now start making serious SF and horror and leave all that Will Smith/Arnold Schwarzenegger (neither can act) in the trashcan of movies that could have been good if a real actor was playing the part.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
MTV Real World meets a monster. A monster movie for people with ADD.
Happily it was not very long, and got bumped my Spartans and Grampbo.
January 29th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
I have to say I Loved it!!!!! But the Questions left after seeing Cloverfield has me Wanting more. A Comic Book or Easter Egg in the DVD or something. PREACH IT BROTHER BRANDON. Some of these Clowns wouldn’t understand a good Monster flick if it fellout of the sky and arose to destroy New york in 1 night. Oh wait that’s what Cloverfield is about. ( Thought The doubters needed it explained to them) Its a Movie that Is groundbreaking and shot through a perspective of a Common Moron with a camcorder. When Blair Witch did it It was new and Different (I thought it SUCKED!!!!!) But Cloverfield gave me the Monster I was looking for not some crap ending with a jackass standing in the corner.

Remember Shallow Hal? I took a girl to it who didn’t get it. I was shocked that she didn’t understand that ugly can hide beauty - Cloverfield. I’m kind’a sick of the confused peoples’ reviews, and don’t want to be included in that crowd. I’ve heard comparisons to Alien, with the “barely caught a glimpse of the monster, but it was cool” reviews at the water cooler.
This is what I want to really say - sequel! sequel! Story; Manhatten’s big, lot’s of opportunity for another camera, this time a news helicopter cam with CLEAR shots of this big sweety prancing around - and his Tokyo native family, friends, and bride-to-be as he enters New York, looking for parking at his new vice-pres job, BUSTIN’ up the eastern coastline! Oh, and either another hint at what’s it’s origin, just to tantalize us for a THIRD flic. Funny, such an original film with so many old tricks :).

I Found this movie to be very good, It reminded me of why i bother going to the cinema,
for the experience. This movie above all else is a cinematic experience like few others.
As for sequels, wouldn’t that just mess it up, i mean for me the creature is more of a
dramatic device, a metaphor, because everything it brings and causes relates to all of our
worst fears and panics, terrorism, that intial shock of not knowing, and suddenly being
affected by something that was a million miles away?? Viruses and germwarfare, the
thing that blew up marlene, isnt that all to do with anthrax and aids and small pox, That
ultimately the military response, which is in the real world what we eventually turn to as
we rely on it as the last line, does not work, something to contemplate especially
considering situations where military might and technology have failed, Vietnam ????
Maybe the war on terror, how do you shoot an ideology. These are just some fairly basic
thoughts i had after viewing, basically what the monster represented, did anybody think
anything similar or opposite??
