Word is Spreading About Michael Cera’s Paper Hearts

So several news sites are going to have a lot of articles today that start with, “It’s not often that a movie flies under the radar since we’re so awesome at scooping news items and bribing First ADs for information…” but we can’t afford to bribe anyone, so we’ve got to start our news with a smart ass comment about other news sites. Probably because we didn’t get enough love growing up. Or hugs.
And segueing perfectly from someone not getting hugs as a child, Michael Cera has a film that will be hitting Sundance soon, and it’s getting attention for how little attention it’s gotten so far. You’d think that anything featuring Cera would be a major sales point for the marketing team, but apparently the creative folks behind the film are keeping it under the radar until someone can – gasp – actually see it at the festival.
Directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, who had a bit role in Superbad, Paper Hearts is a documentary-fiction hybrid focused on Michael Cera’s and actress Charlyne Yi’s dating relationship. Fans will remember her as the major stoner who suggested trading boyfriends in Knocked Up, and Cera will remember her as his real-life girlfriend.
Does it sound super emo, yet? I’m guessing the DVD packaging will come wrapped in an old hoodie.
And statements like those are probably exactly what the filmmakers are trying to avoid. Unfortunately, the word is slowly getting out about this film, and the expectations that the producers are trying to avoid is also slowly building. Hopefully they can keep it down until it premieres at Sundance, but the few we’ve spoken with who’ve seen it range from saying it’s good to fantastic.
It’s definitely something to look out for in the near future, even if we won’t have much to talk about until then. Which is a good thing. But since it sounds tailor-made to my hipster sensibilities, I’ll keep an eye and ear out for you if any other news sneaks out. And just so you know, I also come wrapped in an old hoodie. Because Neil won’t turn the heat up in the FSR offices, and it’s freezing.
