Will Viggo Mortensen Dance With Wolves?

According to moviehole, apparently there are plans of a sequel to the 1990 Best Picture Winner, Dances With Wolves, which starred and was directed by Kevin Costner. The sequel will be titled The Holy Road. Yeah, I didn’t know this either until today. But here’s the strange part about it: the word is that Costner isn’t signing on to the project. Insert WTF here.
Dances With Wolves, which for my money ranks among the best Westerns ever made, was Costner’s movie. He directed it, he starred as the lead character. So when he says no to a sequel (with his recent lack of success, you wonder why he did), one would expect that the project be immediately terminated right. I guess not.
So here’s the down low on what is happening: the director attached to The Holy Road is Simon Wincer (Free Willy) and he is currently browsing for a lead actor to play Costner’s John Dunbar. Who’s the front runner? None other than Hidalgo leading man Viggo Mortensen, who is currently involved in such esteemed projects has the Ed Harris directed Appaloosa and The Road, which is based on the Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men) acclaimed novel.
The Holy Road is expected to begin production sometime in 2009. The plot synopsis is that the story picks up 11 years after the first movie. Dances With Wolves is married to Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell) and the white man is further disrupting the lives of the Sioux as they build a railway, “The Holy Road.”
