If I really wanted to be an asshole, I would have ended that headline “…with heart.”

A quick look at the trailer for Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut is a pretty great thing. It appears to be less about roller derby and more about a young girl trying to find out what makes her happy in life. And, let’s face it, there’s sort of a built in device for hilarious slapstick comedy. On wheels. With heart.

So it’s a pretty standard story about someone that doesn’t feel like she fits in, but I think with the talent involved it’ll be a fresh one. The only x-factor is to see what Drew Barrymore can do behind the camera. Or to see if Ellen Page’s haircut stands up through the whole film.

Whip It! is in theaters on October 9, 2009.
