Hey Neil,,,,
Well I'm sure he was pumping it at a convention. The quote I remember reading was that the director saw the 60's show about the tensions of a cold war state, nothing more nothing less.
I'm basing what I know on the info that's up at
http://www.wouldyoubelieve.com
Please check that site out!
Its the best Get Smart site out there. And there all over this film.

One thing I'll say about the casting is the guy that plays Sigfried is HORRIBLE.

The PERFECT casting choice should have been Thomas Lennon from Reno 911.

And when I saw the trailer nobody was laughing. It was errie.

The director of the film isn't even a fan of the show? Wha wha what?

I had a chance to sit down with Pete Segal (the aforementioned director) at Comic Con last year and he seemed like a big fan of the show. He also said that both he and Steve Carell understand that they may never live up to the legacy of Don Adams. What they have created here is their own modern version. Think of it as if Michael Scott from "The Office" became a spy.

I think that fans of the original series, myself being one of them, will be able to spot a lot of differences, but I think that we will all also be pleasantly surprised at how well this version works. I would describe the theory behind it as being more complimentary to the show that a remake or direct adaptation.

Yeah don't get me wrong Kevin, I'm a huge fan and have all 5 seasons on dvd.
I was really hoping they could pull this off but....

Max was clumsey but he allways used that to his advantage. In this new film he's portrayed as a flunky hack that is promoted when all other agents are killed off.
(Dosnt that sound familer)

Really? He was always clumsy on the T.V show. When Don Adams went on to voice Inspector Gadget, he played the same character only with malfunctioning gadgets. At my Harold and Kumar showing people laughed hard. It's problem is that it needs to be funny for anyone under 25 who hasn't seen the show on reruns.

I like Carell's 86. He's not trying to impersonate Don Adams, but be his usual deadpan self. It still works.

Neil, I saw the trailer and WOW what a letdown. Watched it with Harold & Kumar and hardly anyone laughed.
The one liners fall flat with Carrell.
He dosnt even have the vocal inflections down.

I've read the outline of the script and I can safely predict that this film will bomb. Badly.

The film was supposed to come out in January but did so badly with test audiences that they had to go back and change the film.

Having the film start out with a flashback of Max as a fat looser kid wanting to be a secret agent and then we see him as a bumbling agent in training is very lame.
Max was never a looser he was allways the best agent control had.
