The real tragedy of the Oscars isn't going to be losing the pre-written material. I love Bruce Vilanch as much as the next guy, but patter is never really that interesting. What will destroy the broadcast is the Guild's refusal to allow any clips from movies or past Oscar broadcasts.

I'm still trying to comprehend the idea of an awards show of that magnitude without writers. Without show clips. How will they even salute the friends we've lost this year? I might even tune in just to see how someone pulls off such a feat.

When I worked the show last year, one of the jobs I had was as a go-between for the writers and the script department. A department that used several reams of paper a day. I imagine that entire department sort of gets cut out without, you know, a script.

And what constitutes a script anyway? It's not just what the presenters say. There's blocking, entrances, exits. How do you put on a show without planning that all out?

Ultimately, I think I'm glad I won't be in the basement of the Kodak Theater this year.
