Welcoming a new Reject!

The winds have change have been swirling around our site in the past few weeks (as if you haven’t noticed,) and they have brought to us many things that will enhance your experience here at Film School Rejects. With that said, I am proud to announce our most exciting new addition, Staff Writer Jarvis Mishler!

Jarvis comes to us with a great passion for movies, most notably those of a slightly obscure nature. His passion for film and the clear manner by which he conveys his thoughts were what drew us in, and we things have been getting consistently better since email #1. We are very happy to have him aboard, and we look forward to providing the best possible forum for him to entertain, inform and enlighten you with his views and critiques!

And Jarvis brings along a large audience of friends, family, and fans who are very excited to finally have access to his unique perspective and wide spectrum of film knowledge in the form of formal reviews. And we can gather in one place to get the heads-up on those obscure films he’s introduced us to over the years, which have instantly become our favorites. We’re really looking forward to seeing how Film School Rejects and Jarvis evolve together.

Love how the site is evolving! Can’t wait to see more genres pop up. A suggestion… I was checking out the writers’ bios assuming I could then see a list of or link on over to everything they’ve specifically written. Would be cool to be able to sort through the movie reviews that way as well. And I just noticed that the homepage isn’t reflecting when comments are actually added to the entries. ??

Jarvis . . . this is addressed to you . . .
i am impressed with your writing . . . i can’t comment on any of the films though . . i haven’t seen a movie “movie” since Doctor Zhivago . . ha! . . . but i do see how your writing looks into what a film was meant to be . . . whether the director produced successfully what was first intended or not it appears that YOU can get to the heart of what the intention was . . .

that is a gft which is so absent from much review writing these days . . so many just try to drum up business for a flick . . or to pan it . . .

also i read your profile . .and see that you are studying philosophy . . and probably many think that unless you get a PhD in philo there’s not much use for it . . however . .i think philosophy is a most important course of study . . so many can do and say well but have no concept of “why” or “where to go” . . . with a good philosophical background and a good course in “logic” so many of today’s and tomorrows problems could be solved or avoided . . . so i applaud you.

Thanks for the feedback! And for stopping by! As for the listing by author, that is something I am working on feverishly. It seems that WordPress is not set up to do it easily, so I need to find a workaround.

It is great to see that Jarvis is drawing a crowd! We are very excited to have him with us!

Michael, thanks for being impressed. I impress myself sometimes! :-) I agree whole heartedly about looking at the movies intention. My biggest complaint with the ‘official critics’ is their tendancy to evaluate every movie like it was in competion for the Best Picture Oscar. We know that’s not true! Will Farrel doesn’t want to win Best Actor, he just wants to make us laugh. I think we would do well to remember that.

jarvis . . . it’s good to “impress yourself”! . . . i believe that if you impress yourself, you’ll porbably impress others. (now , there’s a down-side to this: sometimes . . . not often . . . but “sometimes” i make a “bad impression” . . . and then i fugure, “whoa! . . . everybody else is going to get that same bad impression of me!” - and sometimes i’m even right about that! ha!) . . .

but, all in all, better to have people “not like you for what you are than to “like you” for what you’re not” — i think i just heard that line in a country music song by Van Zandt but i more than likely misquoted it. my point being not that anyone doesn’t like you ha! . . but that it’s best to make whatever impression is most honest and let the chips fall where they may . . . i’m sure that you do that in your writing . . .

as for me . . . there was a song by Harry Bellafonte some years back called “Mama look-a Boo Boo” with the line, “I wonder why nobody don’t like me . . .” ha! . . . it MUST be all those bad impressions i have of myself that leave my footprints for them to follow . . . . :)

JARVIS: i just bought the original soundtrack album from the new movie “The Notorious Bettie Page” (i haven’t seen the film though) — and i am in love with the soundtrack with its “period tracks” of orchestrals, country tracks, and vocals, and original blusey-jazz arrangements . . . and of course i have ALWAYS been in love with “Bettie Page”! ) — i’m just wondering if you saw this movie and if you did what your opinion of it might be . . . i haven’t “bought” a dvd of a film ever, but if i find this one on dvd (if and when it gets released on disc) of course i’d love to see it . . . but sometimes “bio films” fall short of one’s expectations since they never measure up to the “original real thing” and Bettie Page was one of a kind . . .
