what about (500 Days Of Summer) ? I was thinking it would be the first disc on the shelf because the open paren symbol "(" comes before numbers and letters alphabetically, right? If that rule is invalid, I'd default to my numeric->alpha organization, using numbers like they were letters:
2001
2010
21
30 Days Of Night
300

The best way to arrange any type of media is the "High Fidelity" way: Auto Biographically. Arrange movies in the order you originally saw them. This way is great and creates a sense of nostalgia as you flashback through your movie going experiences.

Mine are currently in alphabetical order but there are some exceptions. Movies in a serial will be in the release order. For instance, the "Police Story" films are organized as "Police Story", "Police Story 2", and "Supercop". I never plan to change this. Also, my TV sets are mixed in with my movies.

A cool way you might not think of immediately would be to organize the large sections by publication company (i.e. all Criterions together, all MGMs, Lionsgate, etc.) Within that you can organize each subsection accordingly, but those company spines tend to follow similar formats, at least for a period of time, and that can make them look nice on the shelf. Classical radio stations do this because often certain performers record on specific labels, in this way, certain filmmakers work with certain studios for a period of time. Just offering an alternative suggestion.

If you have the space, put them alphabetically with their spines facing outwards, but turn a few of your favorites so the front cover faces out. This allows you to keep them organized and also draws attention of casual visitors to the movies you'd like them to notice.

i have a modified alphbetical sorting for my collection. I sort by title but if it is a series like James Bond, then I put them under James Bond (and then either by Vol 1, Vol 2, etc or by how they are ordered in the series). Pitch Black is now under Chronicles of Riddick, but placed first. I keep my TV shows seperate (mostly due to space issues) and they are alphabetical. And my collector's sets are pulled out and shown off seperated (again due to space issues). Once I get into blu-ray, I am not sure if I will mix them in or not because the cases are different sizes and would look weird.

I also keep a database of my collection on iheartmovies.com and on google docs so I can quickly search through my films (and also if any become stolen, lost or damaged). And when I had room I would leave spaces on shelves for upcoming DVDs so I wouldn't have to re-organize my shelves too often.
