Yahoo has delivered our first peek at the trailer for Ricky Gervais and Matt Robinson’s The Invention of Lying. Gervais will star alongside a smörgåsbord of talent including Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Bateman and many more. To match a fantastic cast we have a truly original concept, as Mark (Gervais) inhabits a world where no one has ever lied, so when he discovers the ability, everyone believes everything he says.

The trailer delivers on this promise and, quite honestly, it looks hilarious. We see hints at nearly everyone in the huge cast, but it’s merely a tease and, by golly, it worked because I want to see this now. We don’t get much plot, which I think is for the better, as the idea is great enough to get people in the door. I just hope it’s successful since Gervais still isn’t a huge name in America. Hopefully this will change that, though. It also seems to have some heart, much like the best parts of ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’. Maybe with the expanded Oscars we may see some love for comedy, and I’d put my money on this.

The Invention of Lying debuts the 25th of September.

  • I'm reading the script now and it's damn funny, although I don't know as the concept is really all that original. James Morrow's brilliant short novel "The City of Truth" explored some very similar ideas (and is also very funny.)
  • Any chance you could email me the script? (If it's PDF). I'd be really interested to have a peek at whats in store. I'll also have to investigate "The City Of Truth" It's passed me by.
  • srsly
trailer looks great, love anything gervais.

    BUT

    BUUUUUTTTT

what the hell is with this new video player? i get that it's for ad support, but I have a good computer, am running this as my only window in chrome, no other programs open... and it's stuttering madly. not in an internet way, but the player just IS SO BAD. the ad next to it hums along with perfect animation and the trailer itself is absolutely unwatchable. can we please go back to the old embedded videos?

this is bad enough to get me to find an alternative site.
  • I have had similar issues. I remember a commenter said something similar in reply to the recent G.I.Joe trailer and I thought about saying something then too but didn't. On both occasions I've wound up searching over on apple.com/trailers or youtube to watch the videos without skipping.
  • keek
While the audio never stuttered, the video did a lot for me.
