English films do not apeal to the African American market. Chris Rock certainly does. Add some racial humor and more shtick. Keep the same little person, they love them. This movie could make more money for the white man than 50 Cent!

Doctor Who The Movie (1996) was essentially the “american version of doctor who” you speak of, it was a co-production between Universal Television, BBC Television, BBC Worldwide, and FOX. It was an attempt to resume the original British series where it was left off only this time produced and filmed in North America (it was shot in Canada) with US funding.
Despite its being American it is still considered doctor who canon and was even received better by British audiences than it was by Americans and Canadians.
You should shoot yourself twice, once for saying you would if there was a an american version of doctor who, and once again for not knowing there already was.

Granted: I'm easily confused by Hollywood.
Not granted: That I will be attending this film simply because I enjoy watching some of the actors that participated. The original was hilarious and there's no need for me to jump in line to watch a remake while the credits are still rolling on the original.
It's my humble opinion that it can't possibly improve upon the original. Ergo, this is simply a money-grab whereby less creative personna's were given a huge budget to dumb down a British film for less discriminating tastes. In the end,it's ego driven as well with some of my favorite comedy actors (Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover and Martin Lawrence) assuming anything they do is a gift to the audience. Unfortunately this arrogance apparently clouded their better judgement and they've chosen to dis-respect everyone involved with the British version by attaching themselves to perhaps the most ridiculous waste of film in cinematic history. This was obviously a safe project as the previous production script they worked from had already proven itself at the box office. Having said that, I think their collective fear of failure may have created what they feared most: they dared to compare themselves, through a line-for-line challenge, to those who first breathed life into their characters and in doing so they displayed their own flaws for all to see.
On the other hand, this sure makes me appreciate the original even more.

So sad to see this, the first version was great. I don't watch a great deal of foreign films but I do watch them fairly often. The original was well advertised here in the states and after seeing it was a current favorite of mine….. then I see
This being remade!!! Wow! Can't we enjoy a good comedy even if it is cast with english speaking actors have, god forbid, AN ACCENT. But make it an american movie with a primarily black cast and now “death at a funeral” is a household name. Sad that a great brittish flick is being ignored for a blatant ripoff!!!!! Word for word from what I can tell in many scenes. Just pathetic… at least give some credit to the “inspiration” in the trailer. Let americans know how dumb we are and expose them to the concept that comedies can be funny without chris rock tyler perry or ice cube!

This is ridiculous! Why do they feel the need to remake this film? I don't understand. The original was hilarious. I will NOT go and see this. I don't care if it was set in Britain. I live in Texas so it's apparently in reach for everyone to see.

For one, I feel it's insulting to the original director and cast to remake it.
For two, it's remade with an nearly 100% black cast. If it were the original movie and still with Chris Rock and the rest of them, this whole point wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

For three, it was only made three years ago! COME ON, PEOPLE.

I just came from the cinema.. the ad for this film angered me lol. Ive seen the real “Death at a Funeral” and i can't figure out why anyone would think to remake it 1-2 years after it had a very healthy following, aside from the fact that it is not a film to be remade…. Everyone in the theatre thought it was a joke. What if i chose to remake Dear john but cast the film starring Mo'nique and Steve Harvey… Im sure it would sell tickets for some horrible reason but that doesnt change the fact that it is still a shitty ripoff.. . It was basically the exact same trailer for DAAF but with Chris Rock, martin etc etc… terrible actors.. I still can't believe it.. It's fucking sad to be quite honest. Whoever gave the green light to this is an absolute retard.. Why not re-shoot the original, but with all of the actors in blackface instead….. Seriously!!.. i'm black and i'm definitely embarrassed of this remake.. I admire chris and martin for being successful but really this is going overboard to the point of insulting… quote me bitch!.. Shame on you hollywood – write an original story for fucksake.. the indie scene is dying to make money.. start there!

I agree that not all remakes are bad, but again, like you said, they were all of oler films! I peronsally think that the original version of 'Death at a Funeral' will be the best because of the entire cast was made up of actors who were hilarious as an ensemble whilst also being able to act on their own.
Don't get me wrong, some of the cast of Rock's remake are good, but a majority of them only work well as cameos. At least with the original there was some subtlety that increased the humor.
However, in this new version there is absolutely no element of suprise, from the trailer alone we can see everything that's going to happen so instead of the audience being made to laugh for hours on end at each separate disaster, the audience is left being slapped across the face with so much obvious humour that the original hilarity vanishes altogther.
People need to laugh on their own rather than being told when to laugh by over acting and conspicuous jokes. That's why 'Death at a Funeral' should be taken on by someone with more subtlety than Rock.
He clearly wants this film to be good, but it seems like most of the humor that was found within the original is going to be lost in this remake . He's going to end up alienating his audience and losing alot of money in the process....perhaps next time he should wait for not only a comedy with his style of humour but one that he can make that fits with all the cast. Or maybe he should just stick to what he knows.

Enough with the America bashing asshats! This, well I can't even call it a film, IS absurd. This is being done for one reason, BLACKS!! Thats all! The original was great! Rock is a one trick pony, nothing good comes from him. Tracy Morgan? Another craptastic wannabe actor.

I agree that there does need to be more originality in American cinema, but I have also seen many foreign films that I do think sucked. The reason you don't see many foreign remakes of American films is, in my opinion, cuz it can't be made any better.

I am appalled. There is absolutely no reason for this to be remade. The English version was a funny original movie and I feel that this is a blatant insult to the people who made the 2007 one. What is this trying to say? Yeah, well we liked your version but we thought we could make it better? Englad has made some great movies and I think they give Hollywood a run for its money and this is appaling. I have not seen the american version and I certainly won't be doing so anytime soon.

Rock made a good choice with Neil LaBute at the helm, since the guy will more than likely do rewrites, and, the best acting Rock has done was in Nurse Betty (again ghost written by LaBute).

This is definitely a “WTF” moment. I am sick and tired of the US remaking other peoples ideas, and then everyone acts like there never was an original. Perfect example “The Office” the BBC version is so much better it scary, and it was only, what 14 episodes. So if Chris Rock is looking for his “Tyler Perry” moment, at least come up with something on your own.

Here is my theory: If you are going to remake a movie make sure it was a piece of crap in the first place. Remake “The Boogens” or something.

horribel film to be remake. loved the original i would actually pay to see it if peter dinkladge is in it again. dude was hilarious beyond words.
as for chris rock i dont see him as a leading man at all. Someone tell me why he hasnt done a concert film. ala eddie murphy delirous and richard pryor . the dude gots the goods and seems like a logical step in a good directioni for him.

Lately (I’m talking late 90′s onward) America, though it has made many quality movies in the past, cannot come up with an original thought. It seems as though more than ninety percent of American movies are either remakes, sequels, or based on books, or some conglomeration of the three, and though some of these turn out very, very well it’s time to put some creativity into the movie industry.
Speaking of this specific movie, I won’t be seeing the remake as I loved the original, but I think one of their motivations is that Americans don’t like seeing movies that have characters who speak in a different language or with a different accent. (Although we are getting better about it, I believe)
