When I started watching it, I though god meh i dunno, not being a fan of anything to do with vampires since you-know-what came along. But after a while, like with another classic show, Twin Peaks, it sucks you in and won't let go. I'm assuming the Twilight books are much better than the movies, but as an older man pissed off at the new vampire craze, I probably won't ever get round to reading them (give me Harry Potter any day). Overall, it is an effective show, and its not just the vampires that are interesting, the social commentary and satire, the outrageous gore, and the pacing (oh god, don't get me going on the pacing in the first Twilight movie) is much much better. I'd recommend the show to people that don't even have any interest in vampires at all. I'd even recommend the show to my mother, who hates everything ever except the Xfiles.

I was introduced to both the film version of Twilight and season 1 of True Blood around the same time. Putting aside the fact that Meyer probably read the Southern Vampire books...I really do see them as very separate beasties.

Everything about True Blood; from the Rob Zombie-esque opening sequence to the soundtrack has me hooked at least.

I am not a huge fan of fiction or vampire stories, and did not know of Sookie Stackhouse books until after the series, which I came to late...@ the end of season 1. But the series seemingly has everything anyone could want as it crosses genre lines with a believable(in context)story, rich character arcs, satire and wit, along with a pacing that is missing from television these days.

From what I understand...the books are very different from the HBO series, but that piques my interest even more and I am looking for a place to buy all of the currently published Southern Vampire novels...

For someone that almost never watches television True Blood has secured my household as loyal viewers...even to the point of considering purchacing a couple 4 packs of the True Blood soda from HBO.com @ 20 $$ a 4 pack.

I hope True Blood lives forever!! As far as Twilight...I am definately NOT caught up in that whirlwind, but not a Twilight hater either, anymore than I "hate" any other teen movies. I have seen them, think that Catherine Hardwicke did a great job directing the first movie-appreciate both films...but Twilight is temporary, throwaway trend art. Not just the movies but the books as well...It's not like the Hardy Boys are important American culture, Meyer's books are the same, her demographic will grow and jump on a shinier louder band wagon before getting jobs and becoming jaded...at which point they may appreciate Harris' beautiful satire.

To be honest, True Blood on HBO came out before Twilight opened in theaters. True Blood I believe aired in June of 2008 (correct me if I'm wrong) whereas Twilight opened in theaters in November 2008. In both ways (books and media) True Blood had it first. So yeah, I don't think True Blood is a sub for Twilight. n_n

True Blood isn't an adult substitute for Twilight. Twilight is a tweenie substitute for True Blood. The books True Blood is based off of were published a good four years before the first Twilight, and Twilight is a shameless, watered down rip-off. Get it right.

It's like comparing Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings. I'm in my early twenties and I just loved the Twilight books and their stories but also I'm really digging True Blood. Okay there is much more blood, violence & sex but that's totally fine with me. You see things on TV you're normally don't see - they push boundaries and I like the accents and stories. It's like a mix of Buffy, Twilight, X-Files and so on. I like both in their own ways and I'm really looking forward to watch'em :).

While it's futile to argue with the commercial success of Twilight (& my wife loves the story), it's disappointing to me to sell the vampire mythos for the price of a caricature by using it only as a vehicle for romance. True Blood seems clearly more of a tapistry for grown ups. Nevertheless, I think the mythos considered at a somewhat deeper level still begs for yet a smarter vision for vampire mythos... consider: www.InParisDark.com.

I have read all the Twilight books and saw the move. And i have seen all the true blood shows on HBO. but i havent read the series. To me, they are totally two different stories that just happen to have some similarites. In my opinion Twilight is the better of the two. Its more about the romance and love between two people than the sex. But i wouldnt say true blood was bad. Neither of them are the same. Nobody should compare either of the book series either. This was Stephanie Meyers first book and series ever. So its going to sound not as intelligent as the Stackhouse series. But for Meyers first book series. I loved them.

So to sum it all up.

Both good series. not needing to be compared. different stories with different characters. and people shouldnt get mad when people say one is better than the other. its all a matter of opinion.

The Twilight books are not plagiarism, and that is for sure. If anyone has read any Hamilton, Harris, etc. books - they all have the same premise. I have seen the similarities. There is nothing that is "copied". The books are based on folklore.....all of them. It just depends on what appeals to each of us and how we relate. Vampire vs. werewolf has been around for a long time - would you say that the movie Underworld also used someone else's idea? I think not.

There is no reason to attack Meyer. She just wrote a story that kids could read. I happen to be WAY past "teen" years - but the story appeals to me just the same. That is the sign of a great writer....appealing to everyone. Not just teens, but adults as well.

OK, I have put my soapbox away now.

Well, I have read the Twilight series and I fell in love with it. I am...okay...over 35 but I still fell in love with the books...and well, Edward ha ha. I have also watched True Blood (religously, thank you), but I cannot compare the two. Twilight is an innocent love story while True Blood, well, isn't. One is HBO, and one is the teen channel. There is a HUGE difference between the two. Basically, one leaves everything to the imagination....and the other leaves NOTHING to the imagination. I guess it is what you are looking for.

Don't get me wrong, I really like True Blood.....but I love Twilight too. I think I need to be "turned". : )
