Transformers Rolls Out, Takes in $36 million in First Two Days

Say what you want about Michael Bay, but the guy knows how to make a movie that people will go and see. Add to that some careful guidance from an Executive Producer named Steven Spielberg and the visual effects masters at ILM and you’ve got a recipe for serious summer movie dominance. Of course we could have predicted months ago that Transformers, the latest Michael Bay offering to fans and hate-mongers alike, would make some serious money at the Box Office. As my comrade Kevin Carr has said over and over again, “It’s big robots blowing shit up!” What is not to love about that?
On Monday of this week Transformers finally made it into movie theaters across the nation, finally bringing about the most anticipated release of 2007 thus far. Sure there was some caution needed when making box office predictions. We all know what happened with Grindhouse, and lest we forget the debacle that was Snakes on a Plane last year. But this is Transformers! On July 4, no less. Finally the fans were ready to run out and see something that wasn’t a sequel. Finally, a movie worth going to see again and again.
Now, whether folks will see Transformers again and again will be told with the test of time, but the quick sprint out of the gates sure looks promising for this gargantuan robot-on-robot CGI-fest. Box Office Mojo is reporting that Transformers took in $27,450,000 on Tuesday alone, making it the largest Tuesday release in history. This also brings the film’s total box office gross to $36.3 million including showings on Monday evening. It’s worldwide gross has exceeded an estimated $72 million already. And that is with only one full day in release. The single day opening ranked 20th All-Time, beating The Passion of the Christ and coming in slightly below 300.
What does this mean in the long run? It means that Transformers is going to make a ton of money. Go figure, right?
Stay tuned to The Reject Report, by John Cairns for more box office news later in the week.
