Are you a fan of inspirational sports movies?  How about stylistic, unrealistic, bone crunching action movies with heart?  If you answered yes to either of those questions (but more so to the second one) take a look at the first trailer for the new action extravaganza from Thailand, Fireball.  The trailer starts a little slow to introduce the story and the drama before the balls start flying around the forty-five second mark.

Looks like a mashup of Ong Bak, Bloodsport, and Hoosiers… with a dash of District 13-style parkour (just to irritate Robert Fure).  The fine folks over at Twitch have already reviewed the film, and the opening paragraph really tells you all you need to know.

From time to time a film comes along that is simply far, far better than it has any right to be – a film that somehow rises above a ludicrous premise to become something far more than the sum of its parts.  In 2009 one of those films is Thai combat-basketball film Fireball.  Did I just say combat basketball?  Why yes, I did.  Fireball revolves around an underground, to-the-death variant of basketball, a game played five on five with the first team to score – or, should a team fail to score, the team with the last man standing – declared the winner.  It’s preposterous, yes, but firm direction and a sharp eye from helmer Thankorn Pongsuwan (Opapatika), a surprisingly strong script that treats its characters with respect and a winning cast that give said characters a believe edge make Fireball a winning guilty pleasure.”

What do you think of the trailer?

Combat basketball...interesting...and two words I'd never thought I'd hear in the same sentence. The movies looks like it contains some pretty gnarly (i.e. brutal) martial arts. I know parkour has increased in popularity over the past few years, and this film seems have capitalized on that, as well...although I'm not a huge fan.

    I'm intrigued, though...
