Super Trailer Thursday [4.27]

Here is something I haven’t done in a while, featured some awesome movie trailers! Let’s get this thing rolling, I have a great list of 3 trailers for this week (just click on the pictures to check out the trailer):

Idlewild

First off the block is the HBO Films release of Idlewild, set to release in August. It stars Outkast’s AndrĀ© Benjamin and Big Boi. It is a musical set in the Prohibition-era American South, where a speakeasy performer and club owner (Big Boi) must contend with gangsters who are trying to take over his club while his partner Percival (AndrĀ© Benjamin) is forced to deal with his own internal conflicts. I have always been a fan of the music of Outkast, and this movie looks like an absolute riot. I am almost convinced by the trailer that within this film lies an Oscar nominee for best song somewhere.

More after the jump…

The Omen

As many of you may know, I am not a fan of scary movies whatsoever, due to an unfortunate run in with a film called Poltergeist at an age which can now be construed as “too young.” Therefore I am not completely overjoyed at the upcoming release of The Omen. It is a remake of the 1976 film with the same name, and it is still about a man who discovers that his son is the devil incarnate. Another addition to this films freakiness is the fact that it is set to be released on 6.06.06. I’m not into it, but I know a lot of people (including a few people on the FSR staff) who are, so here you go.

Wordplay

You would normally think that a documentary about New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz would be something that would slip through the cracks and easily be labeled as boring. But that would be the assumption of someone who is not familiar with Will Shortz and his loyal fanbase. Wordplay, from Director Patrick Creadon appears to be an interesting documentary about something that is not so interesting. With big names like President Bill Clinton, uber star Jon Stewart and Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina popping up throughout the film, it looks to be a little bit of fun.

That is this week’s roundup. More next Thursday.

I'm sorry but I have to ask, why would you automatically think that in 'Idlewild' the reason it'd get an Oscar was because of a song and not for acting prowess or direction or screenplay or......

    Do you see??????
  • Because I like the music of Outkast, and the music in the trailer is spectacular. Once I see the film, I will be able to say whether any of the performances are Oscar worthy. Personally, I find it hard to draw Oscar worthy out of performances from a trailer. The music, however, I am more sure of.

The film looks great, either way. That's why I used it as my lead off hitter for Super Trailer Thursday.

I was kinda just fuckin with ya on that last one man. My bad, didn't mean to put you on the spot.
  • It's cool man.

The movie does look good though, wouldn't you agree?
  • The big O
Oh yeah, I'll be one of the first to see it, I love kast.
  • Idlewild - Holy shit, this movie looks awesome!! Gangsters + Crazy Fun Dance Numbers + Andre Benjamin = My Ass In A Theater Seat On Opening Night. I can't say enough about Andre's little 'side-hobby' that he's found in acting. This man blew me away in Four Brothers and he did it again in Revolver. I'd tell him to make the switch permanently, but his music is just so much fun!

The Omen - From the trailer I already saw 4 or 5 key scenes that are EXACTLY the same as the original. I don't get this. Why would you remake a movie without actually "remaking" it? They should just call them "reshoots" or something. And I don't understand this need to reshoot classic movies and re-release them. Especially a movie like The Omen which was well shot and well acted for its time. At least George Lucas added some scenes with his Special Editions, and even HE didn't feel the need to shoot the entire movie over again!

Word Play - Trailers that don't actually give you a sense for what the movie's about annoy me. Crossword puzzles, I get that. Is it a documentary? Is it a bio-pic about the creator? What?

    Awesome trailer picks Neil!
