Top 10 Reasons Why You Should See “Hot Fuzz”
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on April 20, 2007
If you are like me, then you don’t need many reasons to go see Hot Fuzz when it opens here in the states this weekend. If you are not like me, then I will be happy to provide you with 10 Good Reasons why you should go see Hot Fuzz this weekend. They are as follows:
#10 - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
2 Men, 1 reason. These guys are comedic dyn-o-mite! Ever since Shaun of the Dead became a cult classic, we have been waiting for these guys to pop up somewhere. And while they have both done other things, nothing has come close to the awesome nature of their performances in Shaun… until now.
#9 - Because Fracture is a HUGE Disappointment
How this film got a 75% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far is beyond me. I reviewed it, it stunk. Anthony Hopkins is significantly underused, Ryan Gosling is a bit overused and Director Gregory Hoblit made a film like this before, it was called Primal Fear. That was a good movie, this is not; giving you one less reason to see Fracture and one more to see Hot Fuzz.
#8 - Because they pay homage to Michael Bay and Point Break
Action junkies will love the subtle (and unsubtle) homages to action and fanboy flicks of old. There are copious amounts of Michael Bay references (especially Bad Boys 2) and some neat little references that you have to pay attention for (i.e. a He-Man reference and some old school video game sound effects just to keep you on your toes).
#7 - Because it is the Best Reviewed film of the Week
Of all the releases this week, the Tomato-meter score on Rotten Tomatoes shows Hot Fuzz at 88% Fresh, soundly defeating even Blades of Glory. How can you go wrong with those kinds of odds?
#6 - Because you are secretly a fan of Japanese Peace Lillies
This is another one of those classic Edgar Wright subtleties that will have you laughing at the movie hours after seeing it. Go see the movie, then you will understand the water lily joke.
#5 - Because I have not yet met someone who didn’t like Shaun of the Dead
Try this experiment — call everyone in your cell phone’s directory, ask them if they’ve seen Shaun of the Dead, then ask if they liked it. Chances are you will find that everyone who saw it at least liked it. That just goes to show that Director Edgar Wright can make a film that appeals to the masses…
#4 - Because you didn’t see Grindhouse
I know that America is slowly losing its taste for good movies, but come on people!? Grindhouse has already become the biggest cinematic tragedy of 2007 and it is only April. The online community really pushed hard for Grindhouse and it failed. We get it, though; it was 3 hours long and it was a niche film. Fuzz doesn’t have those problems. Don’t make us look like assholes twice in a row (well, 3 times if you count Snakes on a Plane).
#3 - So that Hot Fuzz doesn’t end up like Children of Men
So many great films die as limited releases. They miss their window of opportunity, fail to find the audience they deserve and are buried by their studio. Children of Men fell victim to this earlier in the year and we can’t let it happen to Hot Fuzz. And as my good friend Alex over at First Showing said, we cannot let Hot Fuzz get screwed like Children of Men.
#2 - Simon Pegg kicking an old lady in the Face is AWESOME!
Must I really explain this one? He kicks an old lady… in the FACE!
#1 - Because all of the best parts of the movie are not in the Trailer
For the first 20 minutes or so of the film you will find yourself saying, “Hey, that was in the trailer. So was that. And that. Isn’t there going to be anything new?” Then little do you know that the film explodes and takes on a new direction, leaving you laughing so hard that you may pee yourself. Just remember to bring a diaper…
If those reasons aren’t enough, then you may want to seek professional help…

#11 - Because it’s British, who for decades have had some of the best, most clever humour in the world, and because it’s not the dumbed down sycophantic nonsensical rubbish that Hollywood pumps out on a daily basis.

@ #1 lol I hate when the best parts of the movie are in the trailer. That pisses me off. I like for the trailer to draw me in but not tell it all or tell it better.

Trust me, im a Brit and its brilliant

This is a top movie, it’s been out a while here in the UK, and it beats the rest of the crap that’s out at the mo.
We Brits are quiet for a few years, and then come out with a cracker that beats half the internationational releases! Hooray

hot fuzz isnt very good. everything in the trailer happens in the final 10 minutes. you get a big dose of boredom up to that point

Perspective from Australia.. This is a great movie. The action is perfect. Dramatizing the action of simple things such as locking a door and paperwork makes it even more perfect. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been my favorite movie duo for a long time.
Everyone who says they don’t like it, don’t understand it.

I’m a Brit. And Hot Fuzz isn’t that great. It’s not bad, but nothing special. Maybe 2/5. It’s too long, and obviously quite self indulgent for Simon + Nick. School boy fantasies etc. Fair enuf. Must have been great fun to make. Shawn of the Dead was better though. And SPACED (TV sitcom) was MILES better. They have lost their edge a bit since then. Although fatty Frost is still funny. Aren’t all fat people funny?
But I’m sure to all your Americans it must be terribly quaint, witty, irreverent and zany British (”aren’t they lovable?”) curiosity. For the connoisseurs among us (those who have actually seen Spaced, and every British comedy of the last 20 years) its average at best.

My wife didn’t like Shaun, but really LOLd at Hot Fuzz.
April 21st, 2007 at 6:33 am
I was gonna do a review after seeing it (procrastination *sigh*)
I had high expectation for this movie after how great Shaun was.
Hot Fuzz didn’t live up to my expectation, BUT it didn’t disappoint neither.
April 21st, 2007 at 6:43 am
Well I saw it a while ago. I’m a big fan of Shaun and Spaced but frankly I found Hot Fuzz a little hit and miss. It’s not a bad film by any means and I can appreciate an old woman being kicked in the face as much as the next guy (don’t worry kids, in the context of the scene she had it coming!) but it just missed the mark as far as I’m concerned.
That said, friends of mine who’ve also seen it loved it so you should probably give it a shot if it’s playing anywhere near you.

shaun of the dead sucked in a bad way people like the guy who wrote this article are no doubt hanging on to a brief moment in cenematic history when they could make a good horror movie (spoof or not)people of this type search for the next “friday th 13th” or “nightmare on elm street”and often overrate these shaun of the dead type movies giving these 2 “comedians” an unworthy status in certain cinematic circles.not to say these guys could’nt make a great movie though im sure they are capable. But shaun is not a good cult movie even.dont believe assholes like the author who say “I have not yet met someone who didnt like Shaun of the dead.Sounds like he dosnt get out much.I have heard from a much larger body of people of various nationailties Who say they didnt like Shaun OTD in fact about 1 person I know LIKED the movie and i dont remember his name.DEAR NEIL MILLER Kicking old ladies in the face is not that funny, are you 12 years old, print something worthwhile your article makes you sound like an undersexed teenager who never gets out from behind a computer or movie screen. Ive got an article, Top 10 reasons NEIL MILLER needs to rethink his literary career!
April 21st, 2007 at 11:21 am
Kickin’ old ladies in the face is hella funny… but it would be funnier if the kicker was a boy scout.
April 21st, 2007 at 12:36 pm
Wow Neil, maybe you shouldn’t have dumped AlphaOmega…Is that you *******?
April 21st, 2007 at 1:46 pm
alphaomega - I feel compelled to respond.
Well, if we (and by “we,” I mean people who have respected opinions on film…) are still talking about it, then it is hardly a “brief” moment.
Just because you surveyed people in China doesn’t mean you have your finger on the pulse. And you are correct, I don’t get out much…
Ok, now you are starting to sound like my ex-girlfriend. But I know that you are someone else based on the painfully atrocious grammar and spelling in your comment. I need to re-think my literary career? You need to go back to high school English 101. I still doubt that would cure that chip on your shoulder attitude about good movies, though.

This week’s episode of Studio 360, a public radio program about creativity, pop culture and the arts, features a very funny interview with Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. You can listen to it here: http://www.studio360.org/episodes/2007/04/27
Enjoy!

[…] As expected, things weren’t bright at the box office this weekend, but everyone seems to be holding out for the next few weeks. The only major disappointment this week was that more people didn’t head out and see Hot Fuzz, which dropped 18% despite expanding by 500 screens. Although, in fairness everything dropped this week. On a side note, if you have not seen Hot Fuzz, you should consider yourself a failure at life. If you need reasons to go see it, we’ve got 10 good ones for you. […]

I love Shaun of the Dead. It´s a funny movie. I´m a big fan of Simon Pegg. If you can, check out the tv comedy series he did some years back (available on DVD), it´s called ¨Spaced¨ and it´s a little gem.
But I have to say Hot Fuzz sucked. The movie has no pace. It´s a long winded, boring story, peppered with unimaginative humour. Twice I´ve watched it, and twice I´ve actually fallen asleep before the end. This is what happens when comedians rest on their laurels…….hmmmm.
