Tom Cruise Interested in Playing Hugh Hefner

There’s a rumour floating about that Tom Cruise is all set to play Hugh Hefner in Brett Ratner’s upcoming biopic, which is leaving the gossip columnists shaking their heads. Sure, it’d be a great role for Cruise, but the source the rumour’s coming from seems quite, well, stupid for want of a better word. Digital Spy and Cinematical both carry the following quote:
This would all be fine, except for the fact that his current movie, Lions for Lambs, is definitely something that’s getting attention, both in the Oscar sense (according to Empire, this shows a marked return to Magnolia form and may see Cruise actually take home a big golden statuette for his troubles), and if Lions for Lambs wasn’t enough, there’s also Valkyrie still to come! Still further, even if he was looking to stretch himself with a dramatic role, couldn’t he do better than to pick a character who’s hugely wealthy and has great luck with the ladies? I think that this may just be pipe dreams, smoke and mirrors, but I hold out hope that he does take the role, assuming it’s even been offered in the first place.
