Tom Cruise Rocks a Fat Suit for Stiller’s ‘Tropic Thunder’

Tom Cruise — yes, the Tom Cruise — has joined the production of Ben Stiller’s upcoming action comedy Tropic Thunder. The film follows a group of actors who are on location shooting a big-budget war movie when they fall victim to a series of freak occurrences, forcing them to become actual soldiers. But Cruise doesn’t play any of the actors, he will allegedly star as a fat movie mogul. As proof, check out the picture below. (Courtesy of JustJared)

Oh the chest hair! Let’s be honest with ourselves, it’s been a long time since Tom Cruise has taken a breath from being too serious about himself and a photo like this gives us hope. Do you remember his cameo in Austin Powers: Goldmember? That was funny. How about the DVD extra for MI:2 with his ole’ pal Ben Stiller (as stunt double Tom Crooze)? For my money, this cameo will be the best that we will see from Cruise in 2007-2008 — Lions for Lambs was an unsurprising snore-fest and Brian Singer’s Valkyrie looks like a giant turd, complete with a bunch of Nazis (Cruise included) who don’t even have German accents.

Combine this with the rest of the Tropic Thunder cast; Matthew McConaughey, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Bill Hader and Justin Theroux and we’ve got ourselves a certifiable movie to keep an eye on.

Tropic Thunder is due out on July 11, 2008.

Nate -- Did you see the trailer? It looks awful. I am instantly flashed back to Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. It gives me chills.

Ummm... no Costner bashing okay? And accents aside, can you honestly say his Robin Hood movie wasn't entertaining?
And regarding Bryan Singer... he was awesome once upon a time. Then he made Superman Returns. And it was a flying turd.
Tropic Thunder looks to be at least amusing. I'll wait for a trailer before I pass judgement though.

Here's my question... does Tom Cruise actually NEED the fat suit in the picture? I mean, look at the man-boobs! Isn't this guy supposed to be a heartthrob?

Representatives for Tom Cruise are infuriated pictures of the actor appearing as a fat, balding studio executive in his new movie have been leaked on the internet. The star is currently filming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder alongside wife Katie Holmes and The Holiday star Jack Black - and is reported to be considering legal action over the shots. In a statement, representatives for Cruise said, "Mr. Cruise's appearance was supposed to be a surprise for his fans worldwide. (Paparazzi) have ruined what should have been a fun discovery for moviegoers." Cruise's co-star Black is equally upset the picture was leaked to the press. He tells MTV news, "I can't believe it got leaked out. Could you tell it was him? He's not going to be very funny in this movie. It was supposed to be a secret, but there it is." Owen Wilson was initially earmarked to appear in the project, but was forced to pull out earlier this year.

Tom needs to calm down...him wearing a fat suit isnt going to amaze viewers. What would be utterly amazing is if he could gain that wait himself, just for the movie, then shed the pounds just as fast. Fat suits are played out :C

That pic with Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey, Jr. is great! The fat, balding Tom Cruise pic is good too. I didn't even recognize Downey. Iron Man should be sweet and this def has potential.

Knowing that Tom Cruise, the Scientology puppet-boy, is going to be in the film dampened my enthusiasm so much so that I will not see the film. What better venue for Cruise to try and convert more hollywood celebrities than in a star-studded film like this. Next up... a cameo on Ocean's 14.
