Tom Cruise: Les Grossman May Be Ready for His Close-Up

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on December 12, 2008

It is unlikely that anyone who saw Tropic Thunder this past summer thought to themselves, “Wow, this is a film that could rack up some Golden Globe noms.” However, its impossible to deny that Tom Cruise’s performance as Les Grossman, the booty dancing, shrewd dealing studio head was anything less than brilliant. Yesterday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed said brilliance by nominating Cruise for Best Supporting Actor alongside Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight).

After the nominations were announced, Cruise talked to E! about what this means for the ever-angry Grossman. When asked what Les might say in response to the acclaim Cruise said, “Les would probably say something unprintable.”

And when asked whether or not we’ll ever see Grossman on screen again, Cruise was optimistic. “I’ve talked about doing different videos with the character,” Cruise said. “I’ve started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we’ve kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven’t found the free time…yet.”

So we might just see a little more Grossman after all. My only requirement is that they bring back Bill Hader as his lowly executive producer chew toy.

Would you like to see more Les Grossman in the future?

  • I thought Cruise was fantastic in Tropic Thunder, but it's the kind of role that could get old real quick. So I say no to any further exposure for now.
  • I'd agree with that. It's like seeing Fat Bastard in the 3rd Austin Powers movie, it just didn't fit at all.

TT was Cruise's funniest role yet. It's too bad his celebrity has overshadowed his talent. Whenever I see him in a really great acting role, I can't help but wonder where they all studied. A good acting school is worth it’s weight in gold. The key is to find one that caters to your individual needs. Not only do you need the basic tools for auditioning, scene study and the like, but you need a curriculum that works with whatever your schedule may be. Whether you work all day, go to high school or care for your kids, not everyone can study in the traditional way. Another acting program that works this way is Film Connection. http://www.film-connection.com/Acting.htmlThe Film Connection’s acting program is affiliated with Joe Anthony studios and fetures valuable one-on-one mentoring. They are also available to anyone living in the United States and have financial aid assistance.
