Tom Cruise in Talks for Mission: Impossible 4

Tom Cruise is in talks for Mission Impossible 4

It appears that saving the human race from the Cylons by spreading the word of L. Ron Hubbard will have to wait — Tom Cruise needs to make another Mission: Impossible movie first. Reports are coming out of Access Hollywood today that Cruise is currently in talks with Paramount over a fourth installment to the long-dead Mission: Impossible series, which began back in 1996. Since then, the three films in the series have grossed over $1.4 billion dollars at the box office worldwide.

As Access Hollywood reports, this comes on the heals of reports that Cruise has also made nice with Paramount CEO Sumner Redstone, as they have been seen recently dining together.

Alright, here comes the part where you must endure my opinion on this matter — Mission: Impossible 3 was just okay. It was probably only okay because of a dude named J.J. Abrams, whereas Tom Cruise was less than stunning as an action hero in his third go-round. Honestly, the third film is where this series should end — I see no reasonable, creative value in making a fourth film. That is not to say though, that there isn’t financial justification for a fourth film — as I mentioned before, the series has grossed over $1.4 billion, with the lowest box office output being the $395 million that the third installment brought in when it kicked off the summer of 2006. And that seems to always be the case, whether we like it or not. In this day and age, if it is going to make a profit, Hollywood is going to commit it to celluloid. It is sad, but it is the reality of the situation nonetheless.

Sound Off: Does a fourth Mission: Impossible film interest you at all?

Wild Bluff Media says:

As long as it moves in the direction of #3 and not #2 then yeah, please do another.

Socratores says:

I still believe the first was the best, although a bit confusing at times, but still
the best of the trilogy.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a fourth one though.

Nathan says:

All three of them have been awful. I hope they make a 4th, it bombs, and people stop giving a crap about Tom Cruise.

Bill Brasky says:

Personal life aside … Cruise is a good, intense actor and I would like to see him in MI4.

@ Wild Bluff - I agree with the theme of 3 and had no idea what they were doing with 2

Robert Fure says:

I’ll be honest - I love Mission Impossible 3. Best of the series, I thought. Love it love it love it. And I will defend Tom Cruise until the day he personally hypnotizes me and plants a demon seed in my belly. He went a little nuts for awhile, but he’s still great on screen. I like him. Put me down for a ticket.

Rob Hunter says:

I’m with Robert on this one… the MI series has actually gotten progressively better with each installment and regardless of Cruise’s wonky life offscreen, he’s been pretty damn solid onscreen. He’s an easy whipping boy because of his nutty religion, but all religions are nutty… he just talks too much about his. As long as Cruise keeps making entertaining movies though I’m perfectly okay with Fure being his seed receptacle.

Richard Nguyen says:

After what he did with Scientology, I’ve lost respect for him as an actor. Hell. I stopped watching all of his movies.

John says:

I loved them all. Put me down for a couple tickets!

Brian Rodden says:

What did you guys think about MI: 2? I thought it kinda sucked. The best was obviously the first so it goes 1, 3, 2 for me.

Brandon says:

I agree with everything, except the “just okay” part. I thought M:13 was the best in the series, because it was the closest to the ideals of the TV series, which is about teamwork–it wasn’t all about Ethan, anymore. Now, with that said, the series ended on a good note. Cruise and Paramount should move on.

Malice says:

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III was the best. The first one was beautiful and was rich with style, but the story was a mess. The second was just a mess. The third actually managed to tell a cohesive story.

alex says:

Not to much old for action heroe????

BL says:

Let it go, Tom… find your way back to your alien home and stop torturing this sorry franchise.

Shanr says:

I really hope Tom Cruise returns as in my own opinion his best character. I love the ‘Ethan Hunt’ character. I was just wondering the other day if there would be a MI4. And you people who don’t want one I don’t know why. If it gets made and your mad: don’t see the movie it’s that simple for all you kids living in your parents basements. This movie will revive his career as an action hero.

ricardo says:

I actually thought Cruise was great in MI3, he totally threw himself into it physically which is what made the action exciting. But I thought the movie as a whole and the work of JJ Abrams was average. With a strong script and the right director a fourth movie could be interesting.

Floyd says:

i have to go with what Brandon has said on this one. The last movie did end on a good
note, but Mr. Cruz has to move on with other matters. It would be to much done on the
trilogy of these movies, but all and all if it does come down to making a forth movie i
wouldnt mind seeing it. Only if the characters are the same actors as the last movies.

George A. Romero says:

Noooo. Please say it isn’t so.
