To-Do: Get to Sherlock Holmes Early for the Trailers
Movie News By Neil Miller on December 14, 2009 | (7) Comments
If you’re like me, you like to get to the movies early for the previews — or trailers. This love and desire for 2-3 minute looks at upcoming films on the big screen stems from my childhood, as I’ve often found myself more excited about the highlights of an upcoming film than the prospect of actually seeing said film. Twisted, I know, but it’s who I am.
The release of Warner Bros. Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day presents an interesting opportunity for folks who like previews (and the early-look grabbing geeks who faun over every still image from the upcoming projects of their favorite filmmakers). Along with the movie (which is good), there should also be several interesting trailers, which I explore below.
Keep in mind that these trailer may or may not be attached to Holmes in all markets, but as far as we’ve been told, this is the slate:

Director Jon Favreau delivers the first trailer for one of the most anticipated summer movies of 2010, the sequel to Iron Man. It’s the movie that put Robert Downey Jr. back on the A-list and the tin-headed hero in the mainstream. Add to that what we expect to be extended looks at Iron Man’s gun-toting buddy War Machine, Scarlett Johansson as the sly spy Black Widow and Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, the bad guy with an electric whip thing going on, and you’ve got yourself 2-minutes of certified awesome. This trailer played this weekend at the BNAT-1138 marathon here in Austin, and we heard that it brought the house down.

After The Dark Knight, everyone’s wondering what director Christopher Nolan has happening next. The mysterious sci-fi film is set “inside the architecture of the mind” and stars Leonardo DiCaprio. Not to mention the fact that the first Inception trailer had some wild wall-walking, mind-bendiness. We can’t tell you what to expect, but we do know that people will be talking about it around the proverbial water cooler on Monday.

Kevin Smith, a fan favorite for his writing and directing of dick-and-fart jokes in Clerks, Mallrats and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, is finally directing a movie that he didn’t write. Even more importantly, its a studio-funded buddy cop comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. It sounds like something he’d normally parody in his other work, but we’re betting that his wit comes through the regular Hollywood gloss to make for a rich experience. That, and Bruce Willis is hilarious, people.

You may have seen this new Clash of the Titans trailer by now, with Sam Worthington as Perseus, beating up on the creatures of Greek mythology in the most rhythmic way possible (set to rock music). But I would contend that you haven’t really seen it until you’ve seen it on the big screen. It’s big, it’s loud and it brings a clear message: Titans Will Clash! They shall clash, indeed.

Universal is ready to unleash the first trailer for the next edition in the saga of Sherwood Forest, say our friends at Dark Horizons. They also say that the Ridley Scott directed, Russell Crowe starring film delivers a trailer that is gritty, realistic and promises a look at the man behind the legend. Based on what we know of Scott and Crowe working together on a period actioner (Gladiator), we have no reason to be anything but excited about this trailer.
There may be other trailers with Sherlock Holmes, but these seem to be the important ones. The Guy Ritchie directed film opens on December 25, 2009. Go check it out — you might even want to stay for the movie.
