Stargate SG-1

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m not just a film geek, but I’m also a sci-fi TV geek. While our illustrious editor Neil Miller can froth at the mouth over the latest Iron Man trailer, I am left to gush over some of the best science fiction television we’ve seen since Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Nope, I’m not talking about Battlestar Galactica. (You’re gonna have to wait a week or so for the Season Three DVD review for that one.) I’m talking about the Stargate franchise that has spawned two excellent series of military science fiction. Who’d have thunk that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich’s 1994 blockbuster could be this good?

For me, I’m on the edge of their seat this week. Not only is the tense fourth season of Stargate: Atlantis coming to a close – complete with a reincarnated Carson Beckett, a pregnant Teyla and a whole steaming pile of Wraith-human hybrids – but the long-awaited Stargate movie The Ark of Truth will come to DVD on Tuesday, March 11.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth follows the SG-1 team where they left off at the end of their tenth season. The oppressive race of Ori is readying an assault on Earth, and it’s up to the SG-1 team to uncover an Ancient artifact that can help in the battle.

A special one-minute trailer for Stargate: The Ark of Truth will air during the season four finale of Stargate: Atlantis on Friday, March 7 at 10 p.m. ET. Additional behind-the-scenes featurettes are available on the official Stargate website at stargate.mgm.com.

Beats the pants off anything Iron Man and Tony Stark can throw at me, I say!
