One of the more important secondary characters in the upcoming Warner Bros. comic book adaptation Green Lantern is that of Senator Hammond, the father of the film’s main Earthly villain, Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard). Senator Hammond is connected to just about everyone — he’s connected to Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) and Carol Ferris (Blake Lively) because he’s  on the Senate’s weapons committee, who decides what to buy from Ferris’ plane manufacturing company (remember, Ferris is like Tony Stark with great legs and less facial hair). And of course, he’s the villain’s daddy.

And now, according to Heat Vision, he will be played by Tim Robbins. Interestingly enough, this is the first role that Robbins has taken since 2008′s City of Ember. He’s done a few TV movies over the last year, but for the most part his career has been relatively quiet. This role, however, should bring some life to his filmography. It also continues the trend of director Martin Campbell choosing legit actors for Green Lantern. You have the young talent — Reynolds, Lively, Sarsgaard — and seasoned talent such as Mark Strong (possibly) and now Tim Robbins. The cast seems to be shaping up quite well.

And just in time, as shooting is set to start in March in New Orleans. Green Lantern will hit theaters on June 17, 2011.
