Go, Speed Racer! Go!

With the upcoming release of the feature film version of Speed Racer by the Wachowskis, the classic cartoon is also getting a face lift on television.

Lionsgate has developed a new animated series called Speed Racer: The Next Generation, which airs on Nicktoons on Fridays at 7 p.m. ET. This series takes place several decades in the future after the original Speed Racer has gone missing. His orphaned son (also named Speed, naturally) attends the Racing Academy and squares off against his brother, the new Racer X.

The new series features Peter Fernandez (who voiced the original Speed Racer and Racer X as well as wrote the classic theme song) as the adult Spritle who is now the headmaster of the Racing Academy. While Spritle no longer has Chim Chim, Speed’s mechanic buddy Conor has built a robotic monkey as a new sidekick.

Speed Racer: The Next Generation – The Beginning is a special DVD release of the series launch, available on Tuesday, May 6. To learn more about the new Speed Racer: The Next Generation, visit the official web site.
