Thomas Jane Drops Out of Punisher 2!

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 16, 2007

Yes, you read that right. Our good friend Thomas Jane has dropped out of The Punisher 2. What? How? Why?! All of these are acceptable questions for any fan of great action franchises. In a letter to AICN, Jane expressed a deep sadness as he made his unofficially official announcement to leave the project:

“Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves.

What I won’t do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don’t believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch.”

Thomas JaneWhat it sounds like, at least from what I can see, is that the studio (Lionsgate) and maybe even producer Avi Arad (that Marvel guy) were trying to take the film a direction that did not sit well with Jane, the man who ultimately embodies the cinematic vision of Frank Castle. The first movie didn’t do so well, we get it. But that doesn’t mean you take it in such a direction that your star walks away from a project, especially when said actor is so passionate about the role.

So with all that said, and if you read the letter you know that a lot was said, the only thing Tom left out was “why” he is leaving the project. Of course we could speculate, but that won’t do us any good. We have taken that question to the source, Mr. Jane himself, and we should hopefully have an answer for all the Punisher fans out there soon.

Until then, speculate amongst yourselves…

Thomas Jane needs to be the punisher if anyone else plays that role its going to be terrible he makes the movie and hes a badass. The director or label need to either pay him more or change the script to his liking cause i will be pissed if Jane does not play the punisher.

Honestly, I think Thomas Jane has played in some good movies here and there in terms of secondary roles, but nothing that has really shot his persona into the big Hollywood elite. With that said, when you say the name Tomas Jane you think of the movie " The Punisher". This was a movie that did poorly at the box office and later, after people started to realize what a solid movie it was, has a huge following of fans now. With the right advertising and Jane at the Helm, the Punisher 2 would have done well at the box office. If you look at the original movie, it worked because it was dark, held true to it's comicbook legend, and most of all it was about Vengence without the jerry bruckheimer over the top FX rubbish that you see in movies like transformers. Unfortunately, someone at the studio pussed out.
  • this was the letter i read off of this website:http://www.ifitsmovies.com/2007/05/17/thomas-jane-leaves-the-punisher-2/

i don't know if it's legit but it really bothers me to read it, understanding, that they undermined these efforts. I dug the the 2004 movie and was very much wanting to see the sequel. it seemed a great place to start. the fictional contiguous universe seem to be laid on a solid platform. oh brother. fan know what fans want. why don't these buisness types understand this simple concept?

I’m writing to tell you that I regretfully and painfully had to pull out of P2. I can’t tell you how completely broken up I am about it. After busting my ass at the gym four days a week for almost two years, watching every character driven action pic that any fan would ask me to watch while I was standing in line buying egg whites and Tuna fish (Leon the Professional, Oldboy, The Seven-Ups (GREAT flick), Point Blank, Escape from NY, The Driver, Magnum Force, The Mechanic, The Great Silence, Sexy Beast, Nighthawks, Cry Vengeance (check it out), Road Warrior, Man on Fire, Outlaw Josey Wales, Rocky (think about it), Serpico, etc etc etc.) after countless Saturday nights making notes and drinking soda water and munching on seaweed sticks while my daughter slept on my lap to the sound of automatic gunfire, (now she can’t sleep without it. I had to make a tape of automatic gunfire to play in her room at night) after hauling myself to any ‘Guns! Knifes! Ammo!’ show in any small town that I found myself in shooting Killshot or The Mist or Mutant Chronicles, after torn ligaments, screwed up rotator cuffs, thousands of $$$ on ridiculously huge vitamins, overly long conversations with frighteningly tall men about The Fastest Way To Kill Someone With Your Bare Hands, and after a dude refused to sell me a Fatburger at 2am on Santa Monica Blvd, I am, sadly – no, make that heartbrokenly – fuck it - just rip out the heart and stomp it into the pavement a couple of times – pulling out. Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves.

I’m sharing this with you because I know you’re a fan, like me, and you’ve got your ear to the ground, and because we seem to share the same sort of taste and passion when it comes to movies and stories that get us off. What I won’t do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don’t believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch.

    Sincerely,
    Thomas Jane

no hate speech. right. i saw the previews for "war journal" and i couldnt be more depressed. look. its a dark saga. Jane did fine work as the PUnisher, and now to make up for the respectable actor, they just try to make the new guy more dark yet, by making references to the abscence of God and hell and all that. get a grip. people say this movie tanked. whatever. people who really followed the comics and watched the movie with the right mind loved Tom. i really wish they would scrap the whole project, make me wait another 2 years, and have him back. anyways, ill see it. but im gona have to be in the right mood now

i just watched punisher 2. i saw a lot of bull that Mr. Jane might not have liked, for starters the whole scene at the dinner table was ridiculous. thats just the beginning of the movie, i think i understand why Thomas Jane said C ya. on a scale of 1 to 10: punisher, 8; punisher2, 4...it sucked
