Here we go again on another beautiful Friday afternoon (it’s raining in Austin) with a quick edition of This Week in Movie Posters. I say quick, because this wasn’t a great week for movie posters, but there are a few notables. The season for great posters should start to heat up here in the next few months, as character posters and theatricals for the major summer tentpoles will be on their way.

In addition to this week’s selections, I would also like to direct your attention to the 2009 IMPAwards Movie Poster Awards, which will name the best and worst movie posters from last years. The nominees are available here and winners will be announced on Monday, January 18th. I will bring you the announcement on Monday. But for now, check out the nominees. A few of my favorites are in there, including the theatrical poster for Pixar’s Up (nominated for Best Poster) and the teaser for the FX show Rescue Me (nominated in the TV category).

Cop Out – Tagline of the Week

What is it saying about the film? Warner Bros. understands that there’s something too this tongue-and-cheek marketing approach, especially after changing the name of Kevin Smith’s movie from A Couple of Dicks to Cop Out. And the tag “Rock Out with Your Glock Out” is chuckle-worthy, indeed. Hopefully the changes work, and a wider audience is reached. Also, here’s hoping the movie is funny (fingers crossed).

The Wolfman – A Basil Gogos Special Edition

In anticipation of the release of Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman, Universal commissioned famous artist Basil Gogos to create a limited edition print. It debuted on CHUD earlier this week, and we have a clean, non-watermarked copy for your viewing pleasure. There isn’t much to say about this other than it is quite stunning. For those interested, the CHUD piece also has a fascinating interview with Gogos, who is responsible for creating images of some of the most iconic movie monsters in history. Hubble 3D – Out of this World

Of all the movies we went through as we broke down our list of most anticipated of 2010, there’s one that keeps sticking with me that probably won’t make any list: Hubble 3D. Premiering at SXSW this year, this IMAX documentary (narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio) has nothing but potential. It could very well be the most beautiful cinematic experience of the year. That is, if it lives up to the beauty of the poster above.

The Crazies – Continually Creepy Campaign of the Week

What is it saying about the film? The poster campaign for this George Romero remake has been wonderfully creepy. And the posters above are three new character posters (click to enlarge), all welcoming you to Ogden Marsh. The locals are friendly, it appears. What do you have to worry about?
