News came yesterday via Heat Vision that two cast members have been picked for the upcoming prequel to The Thing. If you have any ounce of awesome in you, you’ll recognize The Thing as the unbelievably fantastic John Carpenter film starring Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley.  Itself a remake of The Thing from Another World, Carpenter’s version begin with some apparently crazed members of a Norwegian Antarctic research base chasing a dog.  As the story progresses, all the Norwegians are dead and the dog was carrying a parasitic alien that can realistically mimic the appearance of any living organism.

The planned prequel is written by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) and Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street remake) and will focus on said crazed Norwegian team, before they go crazy.  In the casting department, mega-hottie and personal crush #17 Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast as a Ph.D. candidate who is with the team as they discover an alien spaceship buried deep within the ice.  Joining her is Australian Joel Edgerton as a helicopter pilot, described as a mercenary because apparently only mercenaries are helicopter pilots now, rather than, you know, regular people who fly helicopters.

Normally a producer, Matthijs Van Heijningen is directing the film.  While I count The Thing as one of my all time favorite flicks, and consider it among the top 20 movies of all time regardless of genre, I’m somewhat okay with the idea of a prequel.  I mean hey, it’s not a remake so that’s good.  It’s not a sequel, so that’s good – because Carpenter has his idea for a sequel, though it will likely never get made.  What we’re getting here is something entirely new.  In this prequel, a helicopter pilot and a research scientist will fight the shapeshifting Thing.  In the original movie, a helicopter pilot and a mechanic fought the shapeshifting Thing.  Wait a minute – that sounds like a remake.  Only the names have changed!  And they added a hot chick.

So really what this prequel is looking to be is a remake that has been changed slightly and then stuck into the form of the Norwegian science base.  That said, I’m willing to give this a chance for a few reasons: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is hot.  The Thing is an awesome premise.  Ronald D. Moore wrote it.  Sounds like a not bad formula to get started.  The film is slated to begin filming in March for a late 2010 release.

Happy to see Joel Edgerton to get a starring role. He's been making good genre films in Australia with his brother and deserves recognition.
  • I agree that it's nice to see Edgerton get a potentially bigger role, but I'm still not thrilled with the idea. So we have two English-speaking lead characters working with the Norwegians? And odds are there will be several more folks not speaking Norwegian at the Norwegian camp. Plus we already know exactly what happened... and we already know exactly how it ends. Are they going to have Edgerton's pilot character be the one who lands at the US base and dies in an attempt to kill the dog? Cuz that dude was speaking Norwegian.

The pilot died trying to find the grenade in the snow and then got blown up and through the helo's rotors. He didn't get to say a whole lot. Which amounted to one word. In a panic or pissed off state you revert to the language you grew up with. So even then they could speak English around the English speaking members. Besides most Nordic types speak good English.
Its no different to loads knowing how 'I am Legend' ended. He couldn't survive even though they changed the ending and he's the hero. In the book you actually get to realise he is the bad guy. He is the Bogeyman to the 'vampires' Hence his 'Legend'. Last man on earth with Vincent Price was more accurate.
I'm looking forward to it. And they should put the bad guy from Casino Royale in it. Mags whatshisface......
  • Well Edgerton's character is a mercenary, so he's probably going to be like Aussie Special Forces or some shit, hired because Antarctica and you need a highly trained killer... Or something. Why did the Norwegians have assault rifles and grenades anyways? And Winstead could be an international student of the world!

A prequel that is so intrinsically tied to the original is a tough sell. Like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning." You know no one can get away and the villain can't be stopped. Though, there is some cool stuff that can be done - the spaceship is huge, maybe we see the "original" form of the Thing. What it looks like when its just lounging by the pool or sipping hot cocoa.

It's going to be hard for them to make this well and have it make sense, but it's not impossible. The Thing video game for PS2 was awesome and it was a sort of sequel. A sequel is easier to make than a prequel, but I think the game proved that the idea and the atmosphere alone can make a great premise.
