The Rock: Captain Marvel or Black Adam?

Posted by Joe Ngo (joe@filmschoolrejects.com) on September 25, 2007

post-therock.jpgWhy do we I ask? Well that’s because MTV Movies Blogs says that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in talks to perform as either one in the upcoming superhero movie Shazam!. Hopefully it won’t be like the last reincarnation, Shazaam, which starred Shaquille O’ Neal.

According to MTV’s interview, The Rock is calling on his fans to help him decide which character he’s going to portray. This decision apparently comes after his recent visit to ComicCon, where The Rock realized that it should be up to the fans who are most passionate about it. Personal opinion, and the popular one so far is that he should take on the role of Black Adam. He just fits that role better, and his charisma will certainly help. Some of the Rock’s best work in the WWE was as a heel, and that should help him if he takes the Black Adam role. Has anyone else noticed that Dwayne Johnson is trying to get away from “The Rock” Moniker?

Shazam! is slated to hit theatres in 2009.

Cole Abaius says:

I cannot believe that most posters on MTV think he should be Black Adam. I’d love to see the Rock as Captain Marvel.

No matter what, this film is going to rule all since it’s being written by my favorite screenwriter, John August. If I still cry every time I see Big Fish, does that make me less of a man? I think not. Just don’t tell anyone.

Dom Organ says:

I’m going to disagree with Cole here. I was impressed by Geoff Johns and David S Goyers interpretation of Black Adam during their run on JSA and I would even go so far as to say he is one of my favourite characters in the DC universe.

I have been similarly impressed by The Rock’s ability to play villainous characters (Doom for example), but when someone thinks about him they don’t think of a boy becoming a champion, they think of a big scary bastard. That’s Black Adam if you ask me. I doubt he has the ability to play a man the way a boy thinks a man should be.

I do however agree that crying doesn’t make you less manly, I can’t watch Braveheart without getting misty eyed….oh and beheading some English people. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robert Fure says:

Heroes are cartoony and The Rock’s acting style fits over-the-top cartoony and corny better. His villainous roles are over the top corny. Black Adam is a darker character and I like to view him as a jerk, stuck up, but down to earth in a way. He’s not a cartoon. He isn’t a guy who would make big sweeping hand gestures and laugh like a madman. I feel The Rock would make him that.

So The Rock should be Captain Marvel and let his humorous, over the top, good natured self come out and leave the more dramatic (in my opinion) acting to someone else to roll with Black Adam.

I’ll have to agree with the Johns and Goyers comment, and you may be onto something, but I think Black Adam needs someone grittier than the Rock. Might I suggest, Oded Fehr from Sleeper Cell?

A quick IMDB check shows that he voiced Dr. Fate on Justice League, which I think is pretty awesome.
