On Tuesday, producer Tom Rosenberg told ComingSoon.net to expect an announcement in the near future as to whether or not Screen Gems Production Company will greenlight another film in the Underworld franchise.

Rosenberg’s comment that that director Len Wiseman would produce the new movie confirms the insinuation made by series star Kate Beckinsale during an interview with MTV in May that a third film is indeed in the works (Rotten Tomatoes). Beckinsale told MTV: “I think it’s a prequel before I’m actually in it, so I think that won’t include me if it happens.”

Bad news for fans of skin-tight pleather bodysuits and smokin’ hot British babes. But there is still some hope.

Wiseman himself dished on both the movie and the leading lady’s involvement in an interview with iF magazine (JoBlo), telling them that Underworld 3 “Will be the origin story and we find out things we didn’t know about Lucian; he’ll have a much bigger part in it. It will be about the creation [of the races] and what started the war. It will be a period piece.” When asked about Beckinsale’s involvement, he said, “It will be in the time period before, but it will overlap into the creation of her [character] as well. We’re in the process of seeing how far we go with that.”

As early as the 2006 release of Underworld: Evolution (which apparently blew, hardcore) rumors abounded that Len Wiseman and his aesthetically pleasing wife/Underworld star, Beckinsale, would collaborate again to produce a third installment of the motion picture series. All we can do now is cross our fingers and hope Beckinsale obliges.
