Sony Pictures has released the full theatrical trailer for their upcoming reboot, The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. And while this trailer does look like it might eventually turn into a movie worth of the moniker, I can’t help but feel as if The Kung Fu Kid might have been a more appropriate title for the film. Because everything is, in fact, kung fu. Not karate. Or something like that.

The story follows a young outsider (Jaden Smith) and his hard working mother (Taraji P. Henson) as they move to Beijing to start a new life in a “strange new land.” After run-ins with a group of local junior kung fu masters, the young man must put his trust in his schools janitor (who is not creepy at all) and learn the great martial art. The third act will no doubt end in triumph. Spoiler alert.

The Harald Zwart directed Karate Kid is in theaters June 11, 2010.

I don't know about teaching a black boy kung-fu. It just means when he comes over to the states he will be that much better at crime..

  2. Anon says:

Jackie gets 2nd billing in the credits? WTH. All those credits under Jackie's belt and Jaden beats him out by popping out of Jada with Will's genes. And they're still calling it Karate Kid instead of Kung Fu Kid. Epic turd.

  3. Aleric says:

The only reason I would see this movie would be for Jackie Chan.

I did notice that they never showed any Red Guard Troops that normally patrol the streets in China.

    Dude, really?

Or he could turn into Black Dynamite.

Have to agree on this one.

The kids are too young in this. Scrawny pre-teens kicking ass? Give me some Mr. Lawrence for some real menace. Sweep the leg!

  7. Drunken Monk says:

Like it or not, the movie's about the kid, not Jackie….it makes perfect sense he'd get the first billing. I'm a big Jackie Chan fan but I don't get why this surprises you.

I dug this trailer. I'd see it, despite still not hearing any Bananarama in it. That's the real crime.

  9. livjon says:

They? are screwing up the original! Jackie Chan doesnt look the part and you cant have Jaden Smith as the karate kid. He is too young. What a stupid idea to remake it. It would be better if they would at least do it right!

You need to be dragged into the street and beaten with a lead pipe.

  11. Since they are in mainland China they should have called it Wushu Kid. The only thing I can think of is that Smith knows Karate from his McDojo in the states and the Chinese kids wipe the floor with him using their Gung Fu. That is the only way I can explain using the Karate Kid title. I do think the premise of an 10 or 11 year old kid getting in so much trouble over a girl would cause so much drama. Most 10 or 11 year olds would say she's not worth it I will go back to playing my Nintendo DS or Wii. But movie studios need to make money.
