Magnolia Pictures has released the first trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience over on Hulu, and with it comes the first public look at the first major feature film from porn star Sasha Grey. That is not to say that she hasn’t starred in hundreds of other films, but this might actually be a film for everyone. Well, everyone who is interested in the ins-and-outs of being a high class call girl, that is.

The film, which made its surprise premiere as an unfinished work in January at the Sundance Film Festival, will make its official premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month before it goes Video On-Demand April 30th and hits theaters on May 22nd. In my own report from Sundance, I said that with his 20th film “Soderbergh has captured some truly stunning visuals and has delivered a non-linear narrative that is both engaging and not overly complicated.” I was also very impressed with Sasha Grey’s acting ability — she worked well in the environment that Soderbergh was looking to create, one that was created without a script. If you get a chance to see this film — best chance is probably VOD for most of us — I would recommend checking it out. It is one of those rare little achievements in filmmaking that come from the truly special directors out there, like Mr. Soderbergh.

Check out the trailer below along (and the film’s official synopsis), which includes a first look at Grey in her many sexy situations — and a guy in a diaper.

Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election, The Girlfriend Experience is five days in the life of Chelsea (adult film star Sasha Grey in her mainstream film debut), an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who offers more than sex to her clients, but companionship and conversation – “the girlfriend experience.” Chelsea thinks she has her life totally under control—she feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend (Chris Santos) who accepts her lifestyle. But when you’re in the business of meeting people, you never know who you’re going to meet…

The twentieth film from Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh, The Girlfriend Experience is a sexy, gorgeously shot time capsule from the not-too-distant past.

The link totally doesn't work for me...make it work
  • Probably one of those "outside the US" issues. We will have a version in our player up as soon as possible. Until then, I apologize for the inconvenience.
  • I trust in your opinions usually, Neil, despite disagreeing with you a lot.

But based solely on this trailer, the film looks really boring. So either the film is boring or the trailer is an awful representation of it. The music doesn't match the tone of the images at all (and then seeing the drummer at the end is really random and meaningless) and everyone just looks really bored with life in it all. It's taglines aren't very clever either. Overall, completely unappealing. Dullness.
  • "ins-and-outs"... haha.

But seriously, I'm really excited for this film. I'm really curious about Sasha Grey's acting chops. I'll definitely be going to VOD route come April 30.

Excited for this. As with Bubble, an individual's reaction to this film will, most likely, be an accurate reflection of their own prejudices about the subject matter.

Hey, Cole, maybe you should stop reporting about and reviewing films and start cutting trailers.
  • snooooooze... i get a real "full frontal" feeling from this... and not in a good way

who cares if seeing the drummer was meaningless? that's a bad as hell beat... and just with his hands.
