“What brought you to this country?”

“I wanted to be an American.”

In Sam Kadi‘s The Citizen, Ibrahim (Khaled Nabawy) wins the citizenship lottery and immigrates to the United States on September 10, 2001. His life, along with every American’s, changes the next morning. The film explores what happens to Ibrahim within the context of Muslim backlash and a federal government trying to find answers to the worst domestic attack in US history.

Nabawy is probably most known for Kingdom of Heaven, and the film also boasts familiar faces Agnes BrucknerCary Elwes and William Atherton. Check out the trailer for yourself:

The Citizen is playing the Heartland Film Festival, but doesn’t have a release date currently.
