Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Finds A Release Date
In Production By Rob Hunter on January 2, 2009 | (14) CommentsQuentin Tarantino made a bold prediction last May at the Cannes Film Festival, saying that his new movie would be premiering there in 2009. Most people scoffed at the claim as not only would it be an incredibly short turn around time for a reportedly epic WWII movie that had yet to be cast, but the man is known for making empty promises. Vega Brothers anyone? But this time he may have actually been telling the truth…
The Weinstein Co. has announced that Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds will release in theaters on August 21st, 2009.
An August release means Tarantino may actually have a cut of the film ready to run at Cannes this year like he promised. If true, and obviously not having seen the finished product yet, this is fairly impressive. Is one year too short of a time to go from script to screen for an action-packed WWII movie? Death Proof I can see taking no more than a few weeks, but a period-set action movie starring Brad Pitt, Sam Jackson, BJ Novak, Til Schweiger, Mike Myers, Eli Fucking Roth, and Maggie Cheung?
Late August isn’t known as a time for quality releases, which makes TWC’s decision a bit strange. As Cinematical’s Erik Davis has pointed out, this past August’s big releases were Mirrors, The Rocker, and Death Race. This year looks no better, as Tarantino’s film will be sharing the cineplex with Final Destination 4, Mardi Gras, and Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex. So expect this date to change…
And other than to distinguish itself from the 1978 film that Tarantino is “borrowing” from, what’s the deal with the title misspellings anyway? Are we to believe these are illiterate Jews? British Jews?
Are you more excited for August now than you were two minutes ago?
