Quentin Tarantino made a bold prediction last May at the Cannes Film Festival, saying that his new movie would be premiering there in 2009.  Most people scoffed at the claim as not only would it be an incredibly short turn around time for a reportedly epic WWII movie that had yet to be cast, but the man is known for making empty promises.  Vega Brothers anyone? But this time he may have actually been telling the truth…

The Weinstein Co. has announced that Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds will release in theaters on August 21st, 2009.

An August release means Tarantino may actually have a cut of the film ready to run at Cannes this year like he promised.  If true, and obviously not having seen the finished product yet, this is fairly impressive.  Is one year too short of a time to go from script to screen for an action-packed WWII movie?  Death Proof I can see taking no more than a few weeks, but a period-set action movie starring Brad Pitt, Sam Jackson, BJ Novak, Til Schweiger, Mike Myers, Eli Fucking Roth, and Maggie Cheung?

Late August isn’t known as a time for quality releases, which makes TWC’s decision a bit strange.  As Cinematical’s Erik Davis has pointed out, this past August’s big releases were Mirrors, The Rocker, and Death Race. This year looks no better, as Tarantino’s film will be sharing the cineplex with Final Destination 4, Mardi Gras, and Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex.  So expect this date to change…

And other than to distinguish itself from the 1978 film that Tarantino is “borrowing” from, what’s the deal with the title misspellings anyway?  Are we to believe these are illiterate Jews?  British Jews?

Are you more excited for August now than you were two minutes ago?

  • I was under the impression Rob Zombie would be too busy with El Super Beasto and Halloween 2....since they're both releasing in 2009 and T-Rex's script hasn't even been written yet....I also was hearing rumors of June international release date for Inglourious Basterds....TWC is known for releasing their projects early in international markets before domestic distribution...All The Boys Love Mandy Lane has yet to be released in North America, although it's been around since 2007...I hope TWC doesn't mess around with I.B's domestic distribution...if it's date is pushed back to 2010 with all of Europe seeing it in 2009 that will make a lot of moviegoers angry
  • Brad Pitt in a Tarantino movie? Hmmm this will be interesting.
  • Brad Pitt has already been in a film written by Tarantino, True Romance, and was bad ass. So I bet he will do a fine job in this.
  • Oh yea...
  • Whats your deal with Eli Roth?
  • My deal is that when he gets in front of the camera I stop watching. Much like his mentor, Tarantino, he's a terrible fucking actor who can't resist the urge to act. (Although unlike Tarantino, I also stop watching when Roth gets behind the camera.)
  • I have to agree with Rob on this...when they act they slow down the film because neither of them are on the level of the other cast members around them...a Tarantino/Roth cameo isn't a bad thing (Death Proof/Thanksgiving) but having Eli Roth as one of the main Besterds is another thing....I'll wait until I see the full performance before making judgments....although taking Cabin Fever and Death Proof in consideration Roth is a horrible actor
