SXSW 2010: George Lucas to Stand Trial for Crimes Against Geekdom
Movie News By Neil Miller on February 4, 2010 | (12) Comments
As continue to pick through the massive 191-feature deep lineup of this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, we continue to find little films that we’ve been excited about for some time. Chief among these gems is the Star Wars-centric documentary The People vs. George Lucas. Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, this doc is an exercise in crowd-sourcing, and a manifesto for a large segment of geeks who think that George Lucas is the purest incarnation of evil. If you’ve ever spoken the words “George Lucas raped my childhood,” this is your movie.
But as Philippe himself explained to us in an April 2009 interview, this film isn’t just about drawing parallels between Lucas and Satan. “I think it’s important to say that the intent with this film is not to go after George Lucas,” he said. “Not to criticize George Lucas and not demonize George Lucas.” The intent, as he would go on to explain, is to explore the cultural phenomenon that exists within the fan base, and the contradictory feelings that many fans held after the release of the second Star Wars trilogy.
As you can see in the new trailer below, there’s clearly a lot of emotion on the part of fans. Don’t let anyone tell them that it’s just a film… Personally, I can’t wait to see how this one shakes out.
