Oh, the things one stumbles upon while sifting through websites, like the title and plot synopsis of the next Superman film.

There has been an air of mystery lately as to what Warner Bros. plans to do with the son of Krypton. Would Bryan Singer return? Will the Wachowski Bros. take a crack at directing the franchise? For that matter, would the story be a reboot or continue following the timeline set by Superman Returns? And who would play Superman? Well, it seems that we have a few answers to the Superman puzzle.

Superman fans have been pushing for a working title of The Man of Steel. It has a nice ring to it, much like The Dark Knight for Batman. What it looks like they will receive instead is Superman Unleashed. /Film reader Alex Litel stumbled upon the title at a password protected page from the official Legendary Pictures website. Lo and behold, Superman Unleashed is listed as one of their upcoming films in development. It also seems that Legendary Pictures did not want the cat let out of the bag. After publication of the original story, the information about Superman Unleased has since been removed from the Legendary Pictures website.

Excited yet? Maybe this will help. Maybe. The temporary plot synopsis reads:

“Ramping up the action of its esteemed predecessor, the sequel to ‘Superman Returns’ promises to raise the stakes and take the audience to heights of action that no other superhero movie can achieve.”

So, the rumors about a Superman reboot are apparently false. We’re not sure how to feel about this. The reception of Superman Returns was lukewarm and one has to wonder where they would take the story. Will Doomsday make his entrance? Will we watch Superman step in as the father of his child? Do superheroes pay child support? Just wondering.

What do you think of the Superman Unleashed title? Where would you like to see the Superman story taken?

i go with the the man of steel. superman unleashed sounds more like an action packed supes game.
  • I dunno, The Man of Steel definately gives the vibe they're gonna ride The Dark Knight's coat tails.

i kinda like it cuz i always wanted to see supes unleased. though i also like the man of steel title. maybe they should wait for later films to use that title. i really really really want supes doing some crazy action/fighting stuff. that would be fun to see especially with today's tech.

also an action packed supes film would change the general public's opinion that supes isn't badass. i think they will be shocked if they pull it off well. sorry for the double post.
  • Singer has shown he is more at ease in superhero sequels (e.g. X2), he has also gone on record promising to do a "wrath of khan" on the superman sequel, in any event, the superman franchise has a ton of villain material, waiting to be unleashed (thankfully there won't be any richard pryor-esque team ups in this one!)

superman unleashed just doesn't sound right. that's not what superman's about. it's not about him being angry or badass or anything.

i think the man of steel is a perfect title for the sequel, assuming it's actually a good movie (1st one sucked! ZzzzZZZZzz). Yes, they are doing exactly what the dark knight did with the title. and it's awesome
  • I think that is an excellent point. Maybe Singer just needs time to get comfortable with the character. If they bring Chris Tucker on this thing, I promise a revolt.

I think whoever will play Superman in the movie should do so with the milk mustache. It's a good look.
  • The problem with all the Superman movies in terms of action is the fact that there aren't any villians that have powers to match Supermans such as in the comic. Without the "challenge" it just seems that they have to fall back on placing people he cares for in danger and have him save them. After 5 movies that has worn very thin.

Here's a concept perhaps they haven't thought about, how about they adapt the movie EXACTLY like the stories from the comics. Novel concept huh? I give up on the franchise till they come around to this way of thinking.

I think trotting out Doomsday so soon in a reboot effort would be a bad idea... Really, where do you go from there? That should be after we've become more attached to the rebooted Supes. Instead it should be a villain that can give and take a lot of punishment. I think a baddie like Parasite, Mongul (alien invasion), or Metallo would be a better move. Maybe lead up to Braniac.
