Stone Cold Prepares to Open a Can in ‘The Expendables’

Former WWE wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin is just the most recent in a line of notable names to join Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action flick, The Expendables. Also joining is the aptly named Charisma Carpenter, according to Variety. Steve Austin was a star in 2007′s The Condemned and a superstar to the world of professional wrestling. He’ll be joining a superstar from theatrical wrestling world, Mickey Rourke, and a star from the actual-fighting world, Randy Couture, in the film.
Writer/director/star Sly Stallone just keeps grabbing great names from the world of action. His cast already includes Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Danny Trejo, Forest Whitaker, and an alleged cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Carpenter was one of the stars of the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off series “Angel” and even had a sizable role on UPN’s “Veronica Mars.”
I’m impressed with how hard Stallone’s been working to get all of these notable names. None of them, with the exception of Rourke and Whitaker, have been confused for being phenomenal actors, yet in a story about mercenaries overthrowing a South American dictatorship it just all makes sense. We’ll have to see if The Expendables keeps generating more buzz or if a similar project (at least when it was first conceived), Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, steals its thunder.
The Expendables begins filming later this month and is aiming for mid-2010 release.
