Steve Carell is attached to star in a new film called The Adventures of Brigadier Gerard, a period comedy set during the Napoleonic Wars. Yes, a period comedy set during the Napoleonic Wars. The script is by Jon Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, better known as the brain trust behind Will Ferrell’s Blades of Glory, and is based on stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle…?
Carell would star as the title character, Brigadier Gerard, who is both Napoleon’s bravest soldier as well as his dumbest. I can see the pitch meeting now… Altschuler stands and with a whisper says simply ”Imagine Inspector Clouseau…” and Krinsky jumps up with a wave of his hands, “… in the 1800′s!” What studio wouldn’t bite? Just think of all the successful period comedies we’ve seen! And then share them with us, because I can’t say as any come immediately to mind.
And while she’s not attached to the project… yet… I already know who should co-star with Carell. Keira Knightley! She’s been itching for another reason to squeeze into a corset, and I think we’ve found it. Sure she’s British, and they’re probably going to want a French accented chick, but I think Knightley can pull it off. (The accent, not the corset…)
What’s your favorite period comedy? And please don’t say Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers.
