Star Trek

I have been taking a beating over the past few months for my very outspoken disgust with the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek film, now scheduled for release in May 2009. I have been whining about the casting (I love Simon Pegg, but I am not feeling him as Scotty) and I am not too high on J.J. Abrams — and before you ask, the answer is no, I do not watch “Lost” — so it is easy to see why I am not excited. The following pictures, which come to us from a spy on set, aren’t helping me get any more excited about the film, but it may help Trekkies get their Vulcan ears all a-twitch.

While these photos aren’t showing us more of Zachary Quinto as Spock or of the USS Enterprise in flight, we do know that the ships are keeping a certain “retro” aesthetic — just look at that control board, straight out of Shatner’s more formidable years.

Like I said before, until proven otherwise (and J.J., you and I will meet at Comic Con this year, I know it — there is your chance), I am still not sold on this whole Star Trek reboot thing. Abrams is often too secretive with little payoff and his casting is suspect. I hate to bash it, as I know there are a lot of die hard Trekkies out there who would like to fight me (in some sort of cyber realm, I’m sure), but I must be honest. I will admit that I do dig the retro style, though.

For more pictures, there are some still posted over at IfitsMovies.com, although those probably won’t last long. Paramount has been on the warpath this morning.

Star Trek is scheduled to hit theaters on May 8, 2009. The J.J. Abrams produced and directed film was written by Transformers scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It will star Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Eric Bana as badguy Nero, the very sexy Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as ‘Bones’ McCoy, John Cho as Sulu, Simon Pegg as Scotty and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Oh, and I almost forgot — it will also star Tyler Perry. For more, keep hitting refresh over at StarTrekMovie.com, let me know if anything changes.

On the side: I will admit, in my own defense, that I though the first teaser trailer was done well.
