Soderbergh’s ‘Girlfriend Experience’ Will Cost the Equivalent of One Night

Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh has set his sights on another low-budget film, much in the vain of 2005’s Bubble, that will be released in theaters, on DVD, and on cable the same day. The Traffic and Ocean’s director will be behind the camera for The Girlfriend Experience, a film that will highlight the riches that come from prostitution, according to Variety.
Soderbergh, a filmmaker never afraid to take chances, will most likely cast either a no-name in the main role of a well-to-do prostitute (like he casted amateurs in Bubble) or could go the route of an adult film actress. The story will revolve around women who pose as girlfriends for various “Johns” in addition to fulfilling their sexual desires. In preparation for the shoot, Soderbergh and writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien learned that these women can make upwards of $10,000 a night. Good work if you can find it.
Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner will finance through 2929 Entertainment; Greg Jacobs, who has produced most of Soderbergh’s films dating back to Full Frontal, will produce The Girlfriend Experience as well. Soderbergh is set to begin the proposed 14-day shoot when he gets done filming The Informant with Matt Damon and his Che Guevera double-feature (The Argentine and Guerrilla, starring Benicio Del Toro).
