True story: when I was in college, my friend David had an H.R. Pufnstuf iron-on t-shirt that he wore so much it turned into a plain white t-shirt. That serves for an excellent reverse analogy to the careers of Sid and Marty Krofft who are definitely legends, but haven’t been present in the industry in a really, really, really long time.
We would have reported a few nights ago that Sony and the Kroffts had closed a deal to make an adaptation of their 70s hippie-fest “H.R. Pufnstuf” – which we heard directly from Marty’s mouth at a special screening of Land of the Lost (thanks Aintitcool) – but I had to make a sandwich or something so it fell through the cracks.
So now you know. The deal is struck. The die is cast. And the Kroffts really want Johnny Depp to play the main villain, Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo. This all according to MTV Movie Blog.
Yes, the original role was played by a woman, and, yes, FSR applauds the theoretically non-traditional casting. It’s about time some men took some female roles in the industry.
The news also broke that Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens) has signed on to direct.
I can’t imagine anyone outside the stoner community really knows the show all that well, and to be honest, I’ve seen episodes and I’m not sure I understand the show very well.
