Short Circuit Remake Goes The Way of the Mall Cop

Johnny Five is still alive. And unfortunately, he’s in the hands of a Mall Cop director.

Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) to direct Short Circuit, the remake of the 1986 sci-fi film starring Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. This abomination, er, remake will be penned by Robot Chicken scribe Dan Milano, and will bring Johnny 5 (originally voiced by Tim Blaney) into the 21st century. This time around, Number 5 will be a highly sophisticated military weapon who develops a conscience and personality after being struck by lightning. But instead of making friends with a babe on par with Ms. Sheedy, Johnny 5 will this time be connecting with a lonely boy and his fractured family.

In a syllable, ugh. As a major fan of the original movie, I reserve comment out of sheer unadulterated anger. Please join me in protest below.

So you're upset that a director who made a popular movie is taking over a franchise that you have nostalgia glasses for?

Short Circuit is pretty damned campy, and I have a feeling Steve Carr is familiar with that humor style.
  • Yep, that's pretty much it.
  • Bingo!

I thought WalliE was a remake of Johnny 5? I'm just kidding, though they looked almost exactly alike. First time I ever saw that toy in the store I thought Short Circut was making a come back. I don't know how I really feel about a remake, I grew up witht he original and never really cared much for it. It's a camp classic for sure, but the reamke will do nothing for it's memory. Kids won't recall the original which was made ages ago. Everyhting is being remade now a days. I really can't get mad over it, it's not like they are remaking Casablanca, Gone With the Wind or Citizen Kane. Give it time and they will though and that's a scary thought. We really don't need an updated version of this film and I sure as hell won't see it ever.

I have yet seen a remake of an 80's movie come anywhere close to the original yet. Even when the made another "Indy" movie, all the did was try to put the catch line in it to make it sound like the originals. Tho it was still a good movie, just wish the would make then like the way the first movies where made, without all the "CGI" stuff, or at least as much as they use now, to "try" and make it like it used to be. Please do not reun a most favorite move from my childhood
